ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team swept six singles matches against No. 24 Arkansas and took one doubles match from No. 13 Georgia Tech on the second day of competition at the Michigan Invitational on Sunday (Jan. 15) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Freshman Emina Bektas (Indianapolis, Ind./New Braunfels HS) shares the lead in the singles competition with 16 total points after claiming her second straight win at the No. 1 spot, a 6-1, 6-2 decision over the Razorbacks' Claudine Paulson. Bektas, ranked No. 36 nationally, earned early breaks in both sets to cruise to the victory; she will play Georgia's Tech's No. 45-ranked Jillian O'Neill for the tournament singles title tomorrow.
Three other Wolverines won their singles matches in straight sets, while all six Michigan representatives improved to 2-0 in the invitational. Sophomore Brooke Bolender (Delray Beach, Fla./Kaplan Prep) broke early and late to complete a 6-1, 6-2 win over Emily Carbone at the No. 2 spot. She immediately followed freshman Sarah Lee (Los Angeles, Calif./Campbell Hall HS), who downed Abby Hayley, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 4 on the adjacent court. Fellow freshman Kristen Dodge (Barrington, Calif./Barrington HS) rolled past Laurie Gingras, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 5.
Junior Mimi Nguyen (Long Beach, Calif./Millikan HS) and senior Michelle Sulahian (Valley Glen, Calif./Campbell Hall HS) needed a third set to complete their singles wins but teamed for the Wolverines' lone victory in doubles play -- a 9-8 (0) decision over Georgia Tech's No. 33-ranked Caroline Lilley and Jasmine Minor. The Wolverine duo led early in the match after breaks in the first and fifth games, but Lilley and Minor broke back late to even the score at 7-7, before each team held serve to force the tiebreaker, where U-M reeled off 10 straight points to seal the upset victory.
The Wolverines wrap up the tournament season tomorrow (Monday, Jan. 16), hosting the final day of the Michigan Invitational. Washington and Arkansas will start the action at 10 a.m. with singles, followed by doubles (Michigan vs. Washington, Arkansas vs. Georgia Tech) at 1 p.m. The Maize and Blue concludes the day against Georgia Tech in singles.
