ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team was unable to hang on to a one-goal halftime lead as Butler scored twice in the first eight minutes of the second half to gain the 2-1 victory on Friday night (Sept. 2) in front of 2,787 fans at the U-M Soccer Complex.
Michigan grabbed a 1-0 lead on home turf as sophomore Fabio Villas Boas Pereira (Sao Paulo, Brazil/South Kent School [Conn.]) scored an unassisted goal at 19:13 of the first half. The shot by Pereira deflected off a Butler defender and slid into the right side of the goal behind goalkeeper Andy Holte.
The Wolverines had nine shots in the first half, including three shots by junior Kofi Opare (Niagara Falls, Ontario/St. Paul HS) and two from freshman Tyler Arnone (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville HS). The only shot on goal came from Pereira. U-M held a 9-5 advantage on shots and a 5-3 margin in corner kicks.
The Bulldogs evened the score at 1-1 just 46 seconds into the second half on a goal by Austin Oldham. Adekunle Oluyedun assisted on the Oldham goal and just four minutes later scored the eventual game-winner off a crossing pass from Brycen Howard.
Michigan had the field tilted in the Butler end during most of the final 10 minutes but was unable to get the equalizer. Pereira was taken down in the box with 11 seconds remaining in the contest, setting up a penalty shot; however, his shot to the lower left side was stopped on a diving save by Holte to preserve the Butler win.
Michigan returns to the home field on Sunday (Sept. 4) against Northern Illinois at 2:30 p.m.
