NEW ORLEANS, La. -- The University of Michigan women's cross country team was tabbed No. 13 in the Division I national cross country coaches' preseason poll as announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) today (Tuesday, Aug. 30).
The Wolverines earned the highest ranking among Big Ten opponents in the national poll. Three other conference teams, including Penn State (No. 18), Iowa (No. 28) and Michigan State (No. 29), also appeared in the top 30.
Michigan's preseason ranking is a 13-spot improvement from a year ago. The Maize and Blue reached its highest ranking during the 2010 season when it was tabbed No. 17 in the final regular-season poll on Nov. 16.
U-M returns all but one scorer from the 2010 squad, which finished 22nd at the NCAA Championship last season. The Wolverines will be led by a pair of 2010 All-Big Ten honorees in fifth-year senior Danielle Tauro (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional) and junior Jillian Smith (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional).
