
Summer Updates: Bektas, Lee and Sulahian Win Summer Circuit Titles

ITA Summer Circuit -- Cal State Los Angeles (July 23-25)
Senior Michelle Sulahian (Valley Glen, Calif./Campbell Hall) and incoming freshman Sarah Lee (Los Angeles, Calif./Campbell Hall) teamed up to win the doubles title at the ITA Summer Circuit held July 23-25 at Cal State Los Angeles. The tandem defeated Lau/Kiss in the final by a score of 8-5. In singles action, Sulahian reached the semifinals before falling to Purdue's Lynda Xepoleas, 6-2, 6-2.
ITA Summer Circuit -- University of Cincinnati (July 23-25)
Incoming freshman Emina Bektas (Indianapolis, Ind./New Braunfels) won both the singles and doubles draws at the University of Cincinnati's ITA Summer Circuit this past weekend (Sat-Mon., July 23-25). The singles crown marks her third ITA Summer Circuit victory of the year.
Bektas received the tournament's No. 1 seed, winning all six matches in straight sets. She did not allow her opponent to win a game until her quarterfinal win over Courtney Wild, a 6-1, 6-1 decision. She clinched the tournament with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Jithmie Jayawickerma. In addition to her singles title, she teamed up with Katherin Winningham to win the doubles tournament. The pair knocked off Ohio State's Cara Cecil and Kelsey Haviland, the tournament's No. 1 seed, in the final (8-5) for the win.
Cal Open - Seascape Sports Club (Aptos, Calif.)
Sophomore Sam Critser (Mountain View, Calif./Mountain View) won the Cal Open, rallying for a three-set (0-6, 6-0, 7-5) win in the final over Jelena Pandzic, ranked No. 314 in the world.[ Story ]
ITA Summer Circuit - Western Michigan University (July 16-18)
Incoming freshman Emina Bektas (Indianapolis, Ind./New Braunfels) picked up her second ITA Summer Circuit win of the season, winning the Western Michigan edition last weekend (July 16-18).
Bektas knocked off Notre Dame's Jennifer Kellner in the final match, 7-6 (2), 6-2. She was seeded No. 4 in the tournament, winning four of her five matches in straight sets.
With her two wins, she will compete in the USTA/ITA Summer Championships Aug. 13-17 in Bloomington, Ind.
ITA Summer Circuit - Purdue University (July 2-4)
Incoming freshman Emina Bektas (Indianapolis, Ind./New Braunfels) won the 2011 ITA Summer Circuit at Purdue University over the weekend (Sat-Mon., July 2-4), earning a bid to the USTA/ITA National Summer Championships.
Bektas, the No. 6 seed in the tournament, defeated No. 4-seeded Jennifer Rabot of Purdue in the final (6-3, 6-3) to earn the title. Bektas won all six of her matches in straight sets, including a 7-6 (5), 6-3 triumph over No. 3-seeded Hanna Mar of Duke in the quarterfinals.
The ITA Summer Circuit is currently made up of eight regional circuits (East, Mid-Atlantic, Southeast, Midwest, Central, Mountain, Texas and West) consisting of four consecutive open tournaments played during the month of July, leading up to the USTA/ITA National Summer Championships Aug. 13-17 in Bloomington, Indiana.
