ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- In the final selection of the 2011 season, University of Michigan men's gymnastics freshman Sam Mikulak (Corona del Mar, Calif./Carona del Mar) was given his first NCAA Men's Gymnast of the Week award on Wednesday (April 20). Sponsored by the College Gymnastics Association, the honor is voted on each week by 17 collegiate varsity coaches, 28 honorary life members and seven club program coaches. This final selection elicited the most voting responses of the season.
Mikulak became the third-ever Michigan Wolverine to win the NCAA all-around title last Friday (April 16), joining Gil Larose (1963) and Chris Cameron (2010). Moreover, Mikulak surpassed eight current Senior National Team members competing against him in the all-around field to claim the gold. He qualified into event finals on Saturday (April 17) in three apparatuses, placing third on floor, fourth on parallel bars, and seventh on vault. With his all-around and event finishes, he garnered four All-America honors. Mikulak is also believed to be the first freshman to ever win an NCAA all-around title.
Mikulak will be competing this summer at the USA Championships, held Aug. 17-20 in St. Paul, Minn., as he looks to earn a spot on the Senior National Team representing the United States in international competition.
The NCAA Team and All-Around Finals will be broadcast Thursday (April 21) on ESPN2 at 1:30 p.m.
