PARRISH, Fla. -- Sophomore Caramia Sitompul (Jakarta, Indonesia/Bradenton Prep Academy [Bradenton, Fla.]) and freshman Alyssa Shimel (Pemberville, Ohio/Eastwood) each shot single-round and 54-hole tournament career bests during the two-day Central District Invitational, where the University of Michigan women's golf team finished ninth with a 901 today (Tuesday, Feb. 22) at the River Wilderness Golf Club.
In a field that featured 12 teams ranked among the top 50, the Wolverines opened with rounds of 301 and 302 yesterday (Monday, Feb. 21) and held a tie for seventh after 36 holes. Sitompul and Shimel highlighted the first day of play, recording single-round career bests in the second round; Sitompul posted a two-over 74, while Shimel had an even-par 72.
Playing with Ohio State and Michigan State on the final day, junior Meagan Bauer (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) used a one-under 71 and Sitompul lowered her career best by a stroke, with a 73, to help Michigan close with a final-round 298, the third time this season U-M eclipsed the 300-stroke barrier.
Sitompul led U-M for the first time in her career, tying for 25th with a career-best 225 (78-74-73). Meanwhile, senior Min Yean Tan (Penang Island, Malaysia/Hills International College [Australia]) tied for 30th at 226 (75-74-77) and Bauer tied for 35th at 227 (74-82-71). N O T E S
Caramia Sitompul set a new career best for a single round twice. First, she set the mark with a 74 in the second round, only to better it with a 73 in the final round.
Using back-to-back career-best rounds, Caramia Sitompul set a new career best for a 54-hole tournament with a 225. She topped her previous best of 231 shot last year at the 2010 Indiana Invitational. She also finished as the top Wolverine in an event for the first time in her career.
Meagan Bauer's final-round, one-under 71 is her third sub-par round of the season. She had a career-best, one-under 69 in the second round of the Challenge at Onion Creek and a one-under 71 in the second round of the Lady Northern.
Alyssa Shimel set a new career best with an even-par 72 in the second round. With that round, she produced a new career best for a 54-hole tournament with a 230 (81-72-77). She topped her prior best of 74, which she fired in the first round of the Challenge at Onion Creek and 233, which she has tallied twice, at the Wolverine Invitational and Mary Fossum Invitational.
Q U O T E S
Michigan Head Coach Cheryl Stacy
On the Central District Invitational ... "The thing I was pleased with the most was the fact we had everyone contribute at one point or another. We had good scores from each player throughout the event at one point or another. When I looked at the stats after two rounds, we were 22 over par on holes 16 to 18 and we were 27 over total. We knew they were tough holes, especially to start on, and I am not sure if it was nerves, but you can really look at that and if we can get off to just a little bit better start we could have really made a move."
On the play of Caramia Sitompul ... "Caramia really stepped up her game. We really have been trying to seal up that last spot in our lineup. She really has worked hard to improve her game and prove to herself that she can do it. For her to be low for our team really says a lot about how much work she has put in. It's very encouraging to see her do so well."
On where the Wolverines go from here ... "We had a lot of good things happen at this event. We got some wins we needed that is only going to help us, rankings-wise. This is just the second event we have this spring, so it has been great to see us really push to play as best we can. It's exciting to see how much these girls want to get better. They all wanted to go practice after their rounds. They were even on their phones updating Golfstat to see where we were at. It's just a great attitude and culture is really getting to where we want it to be."
