PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- University of Michigan sophomore Connor Jaeger (Rumson, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven) was named Big Ten Men's Swimmer of the Week on Tuesday (Dec. 6) after his performance at the Hawkeye Invitational in Iowa City, Iowa. Jaeger earned two individual event titles -- in the 500-yard freestyle and the 1,650-yard freestyle -- and a relay title (800-yard freestyle) to earn a trio of NCAA consideration marks.
Jaeger began his weekend performance on Friday (Dec. 2) with a pool-record win in the 500-yard freestyle, clocking a 4:15.94. The effort ranks as the top time in the Big Ten this season, and second nationally.
On Saturday, (Dec. 3), he placed third in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:36.86 and closed out the day's effort with a top finish in the 800-yard freestyle relay, combining with sophomore Kyle Whitaker (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton), sophomore Michael Wynalda (Wyoming, Mich./Grandville) and junior Roman Willets (Whitehouse, Ohio/St. Francis deSales) to swim a pool-record 6:28.09 and rank fifth in the NCAA and second in the Big Ten.
On Sunday (Dec. 4), Jaeger blew away the competition with a 14:55.70 mile, another pool record, and was nearly five seconds faster than his second-place teammate, sophomore Sean Ryan (Hixson, Tenn./McCallie School). The mark ranks sixth in the nation and tops in the conference.
The honor is Jaeger's second of the season and second of his career, as he previously earned the plaudit on Oct. 18 for his performance at the Dennis Stark Relays. The honor is the third of the season for the Wolverines, as senior Dan Madwed (Stamford, Conn./Towson) earned the honor on Nov. 8.
