ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team edged the University of Texas (150.50-149.50) and defeated Indiana University (216-84) to sweep a double dual meet on Saturday (Nov. 5) at Canham Natatorium.
Michigan led 146.5-136.5 heading into the final event, the 200 free relay, and used a second-place finish to thwart the Texas comeback as the quartet of junior Evan Gregg (Blacksburg, Va./Blacksburg), junior Miguel Ortiz (Tokyo, Japan/St. Mary's International), freshman Bruno Ortiz (Tokyo, Japan/St. Mary's International) and junior Roman Willets (Whitehouse, Ohio/St. Francis deSales) touched the wall with a runner-up time of 1:20.47.
U-M began the day with a second-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay, as the foursome of junior Sean Fletcher (Vienna, Va./James Madison), freshman Richard Funk (Edmonton, Alberta/Stratchcona), senior Dan Madwed (Stamford, Conn./Towson) and junior Miguel Ortiz (Tokyo, Japan/St. Mary's International) combined to clock a time of 1:29.42, just behind Texas' time of 1:29.05.
Junior Ryan Feeley (Rye, N.Y./Rye) captured the first U-M title of the afternoon, as he won the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 15:12.68. One event later in the 200 freestyle, U-M sophomore Connor Jaeger (Rumson, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven) won the event with a 1:37.21, while classmate Michael Wynalda (Wyoming, Mich./Grandville) notched a 1:38.00 to give the Wolverines a 1-2 finish.
Michigan then went on a three-event win streak, as Ortiz won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 47.73, and Funk followed with a win in the 100-yard breaststroke. Madwed closed out the run with a victory in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:45.66.
U-M added to the event title tally at crunch time, as Jaeger added another win, this time coming in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:20.15, topping Texas' Jackson Wilcox (4:26.20). Madwed followed in the ensuing event and was victorious in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 47.42 to bring the U-M lead to 128-117 over Texas with two events remaining.
U-M will hit the pool again next Friday through Sunday (Nov. 11-13) as the team travels to the US Grand Prix in Minneapolis, Minn. The three-day event will be hosted by the University of Minnesota at University Aquatic Center.
