MARQUETTE, Mich. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team (No. 1 USCHO.com/No. 2 USA Today) battled back from a two-goal third-period deficit to tie the game with less than four minutes left in regulation but ultimately dropped a 5-3 decision at Northern Michigan (No. 17 USCHO/NR USA Today) tonight (Friday, Oct. 21) at the Berry Event Center.
After a scoreless period and a half, Michigan goaltender Shawn Hunwick (Sterling Heights, Mich.) was run into after a shot by Northern Michigan's Andrew Cherniwchan and was consequently ejected from the game after a series of altercations between the two teams. Hunwick received a five-minute major for contact to the head and a game misconduct, while U-M forward Luke Moffatt (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) was called for fighting and given a game disqualification. Cherniwchan was also served with a fighting major and a game DQ.
Nearly five minutes after the penalties, Northern Michigan struck first on the scoreboard when Dylan Walchuk put home his first of the year to open up a 1-0 advantage for the home team.
Michigan answered quickly when David Wohlberg (Lyon, Mich.) hit Lindsay Sparks (Oakville, Ontario) in stride out of the penalty box to set the junior up for a breakaway goal and knot the game at 1-1.
However, NMU reclaimed the lead just 11 seconds later on Matt Thurber's first goal of the season. The Wildcats then opened up a two-goal advantage at the 1:01 mark of the third period when Mitch Jones buried a point shot for the 3-1 lead.
Michigan closed the gap to 3-2 at the 13:08 mark of the third period when Zach Hyman (Toronto, Ontario) put home the first goal of his collegiate career.
Travis Lynch (White Lake, Mich.) tied the game at 3-3 with his second goal of the season coming at the 16:14 mark of the third period, but Northern Michigan scored the eventual game-winner with 2:24 left on the clock and added the insurance goal with Michigan goaltender Adam Janecyk (Ada, Mich.) on the bench in favor of an extra attacker.
Hunwick turned aside all 17 shots he faced in the first 30:38 of action, while Janecyk made 10 saves on 14 shots in the first loss of his career. Reid Ellingson allowed three goals on 27 shots in the win.
Michigan was held off the board on six power plays and allowed one goal on seven shorthanded situations.
The Wolverines and Wildcats will close out their two-game series tomorrow night (Saturday, Oct. 22) at the Berry Events Center. Game time is scheduled for 7:35 p.m.
