ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team split a pair of scrimmages on Sunday (Oct. 2), falling to Providence, 11-10, in overtime before blowing out Concordia (Wis.), 16-3, at Michigan Stadium.
Facing Providence in its opening contest as a varsity program, Michigan overcame a three-goal deficit in the fourth quarter to force overtime. One minute and 56 seconds into sudden-victory overtime, the Friars captured the exhibition win.
Fifth-year senior attackman Trevor Yealy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) led U-M with three goals in game one, while sophomore midfielder Douglas Bryant (Princeton, N.J./Princeton) and freshman midfielder William Meter (Beverly Hills, Mich./Brother Rice) chipped in two goals apiece. Freshman goalie Emil Weiss (Cary, N.C./Apex) made 15 saves, including eight in the first quarter when Providence outshot U-M 14-6.
Michigan scored the first three goals of the game against Concordia and answered the Falcons' lone first-half tally with a 10-goal run through the end of the third quarter. Freshman midfielder Andrew Mosko (Bethesda, Md./Georgetown Prep) notched a hat trick. Yealy, Bryant, sophomore attackman Jeffrey Chu (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) and freshman midfielder David Joseph (Westlake, Ohio/St. Ignatius) each had two goals.
Michigan wraps up its fall schedule on Saturday (Oct. 8) at the Nick Calleluori Classic in Philadelphia, Pa. U-M faces St. Joseph's at 9:30 a.m. and Towson at 12:30 p.m.
Q U O T E S
Michigan Head Coach John Paul
On today's scrimmages ... "Great day. Great experience. Obviously pretty special as it was our first competition as a Division I program. Playing in the Big House -- we all as Michigan people appreciate this opportunity. From a lacrosse standpoint we got better as the day went on. That's what we wanted to see today. We came out kind of shaky. Starting out I think the guys were a little nervous. Once they got their feet under them and understood what we were asking of them I thought we played pretty well. But we have a lot to work on."
On the experience of playing a close game against Providence ... "That's been a hallmark of our team for the last five years. We've played in a fair number of close games. Nine times out of 10 we've come out ahead in those. A lot of that is because we put them in competitive situations in practice, so we talk about adversity a lot and we hope we have them prepared. I think you saw that today. We were in a close game, but the guys were just having fun with it. They weren't panicking, they weren't yelling at each other. They were just focusing up and enjoying the moment. That's really the key in those (games). We would have liked to come out on top, but once you get to an overtime situation -- like any sport -- you have to have some things go your way."
On the chance to see U-M's depth vs. Concordia ... "Obviously, we got a lot of guys in -- everyone who was available -- and they got a lot of time. That was great for them. We also got to fix some of the things that we didn't do so well. Tactically, (there were) some mistakes that we were making. It was great to be able to come back the same day and fix those things that we were doing wrong."
On what the focus of this week's practice will be ... "We want to refocus and make sure the guys understand that we still have another week of pretty intense preparation. We have an opportunity to play two good Division I programs. We'll be tested. We'll have to do it on the road. There were some things we didn't do very well today -- clearing the ball, most markedly -- that we have to work on. That will be a focus this week. Having (Brian) Greiner back next week, facing off, will make a big difference for us. Possession is such a key. Faceoffs and clearing makes such a difference in that. Those are two things we'll focus on a lot this week."
