PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- University of Michigan sophomore Connor Jaeger (Rumson, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven) was named Big Ten Men's Swimmer of the Week on Tuesday (Oct. 18) after his performance at the Dennis Stark Relays and Michigan's quad meet victory over Notre Dame, Oakland and TCU last weekend.
At the Dennis Stark Relays last Friday (Oct. 14), Jaeger teamed with sophomore Sean Ryan (Hixson, Tenn./McCallie School) to win the 1,000-yard freestyle relay (9:02.04). Jaeger was also a part of the winning 800-yard freestyle relay (6:44.97), along with Ryan, junior Roman Willets (Whitehouse, Ohio/St. Francis deSales) and sophomore Ryutaro Kamiya (Tokyo, Japan/St. Mary's International). Those two victories helped Michigan to its 43rd season-opening win in its last 44 seasons.
Jaeger won two additional individual events last Saturday (Oct. 15), in aiding the Wolverines to victories over Notre Dame (174-119), Oakland (190-97), and TCU (178-115). Jaeger won the 500-yard freestyle (4:26.77) with a time that was six seconds faster than his split on the 1,000-yard freestyle from Friday (4:32.78), and also won the 1,000-yard freestyle with a career-best time of 9:10.63, which was a 16-second improvement from his previous career best.
It is the first weekly honor of Jaeger's career. He is the first Michigan swimmer to earn the conference's weekly recognition since Dan Madwed (Stamford, Conn./Towson) on Jan. 18, 2011.
The Wolverines will open the home portion of their schedule on Saturday (Oct. 22), hosting Toronto, Club Wolverine Elite and the Canadian National Training Center team at 4 p.m. at Canham Natatorium.
