
Four Wolverines Remain Unbeaten in Singles Play at Michigan Invitational

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 8-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team won four of eight singles matches against No. 16 Georgia Tech and took two doubles matches from No. 23 Washington on the Michigan Invitational's second day of competition Sunday (Jan. 16) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Senior Denise Muresan (Lincolnshire, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) leads the singles competition with 16 total points after defeating her second consecutive ranked opponent in Georgia Tech's Jillian O'Neill (No. 39). Muresan outlasted O'Neill in a first-set tiebreaker before coasting for a 6-2 second-set win for the match.
Three other Wolverines won their singles matches to move to 2-0 in the Invitational. Senior Rika Tatsuno (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula) won her second consecutive singles match, dispatching Rocio Lopez, 6-3, 6-2. Freshman Sam Critser (Mountainview, Calif./Mountainview) won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4 over Sasha Krupina, and junior Michelle Sulahian (Valley Glen, Calif./Campbell Hall School) earned her second straight three-set win with a 7-6 (4), 2-6, 6-3 victory against Elizabeth Kilborn.
U-M went 2-1 in doubles action against No. 23 Washington as Muresan and freshman Brooke Bolender (Delray Beach, Fla./Kaplan) paired up for an 8-2 decision, as did Critser and sophomore Mimi Nguyen (Long Beach, Calif./Millikan). With the two wins, U-M pushed its doubles record to 5-2 on the weekend.
The Wolverines wrap up the tournament season tomorrow (Monday, Jan. 17), hosting the final day of the Michigan Invitational. Washington and Georgia Tech will start the action at 10 a.m. with singles, followed by doubles (Michigan vs. Georgia Tech, Tennessee vs. Washington) at 1 p.m. The Maize and Blue concludes the day against Tennessee in singles.

FORMAT OF PLAY
Each team will play three rounds of doubles and three rounds of singles. There will be eight flights in singles and four flights in doubles. Each day will consist of eight doubles matches and 16 singles matches. The third set will be played to completion in singles. Points will be allotted for each win based on the following decreasing point value to determine the champion (singles and doubles) at the end of the weekend.
