CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team kicked off its fall season this weekend (Saturday-Sunday, Sept. 25-26) at the Miami Fall Invitational, winning five singles and three doubles matches at the rain-shortened tournament held at Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
Sophomore Mimi Nguyen (Long Beach, Calif./Millikan) won both her doubles matches, teaming up with freshman Sam Critser (Mountain View, Calif./Mountain View) to knock off Miami's Danielle Mills and Bistra Otashlyska, 9-7, before pairing with freshman Brooke Bolender (Delray Beach, Fla./Kaplan) to defeat South Florida's duo of Janette Bejikova and Loreta Alonso Martinez, 8-6. Critser and junior Michelle Sulahian (Valley Glen, Calif./Campbell Hall School) won U-M's other doubles matchup, defeating Allesondra Bonte and Kate Parker of South Florida, 8-2.
Michigan picked up all five of its singles victories on Saturday, with No. 12-ranked senior Denise Muresan (Lincolnshire, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) defeating No. 106 Jenny Frisell of UCF, 6-0, 6-1, to highlight the afternoon.
Only three singles matches were completed on Friday, as Michigan did not take the court on the first day of action.
The Wolverines return home next weekend (Friday-Sunday, Oct. 1-3) to host the Wolverine Invitational. Action will start each day at 10 a.m. at the Varsity Tennis Center.
