ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The national champion University of Michigan men's gymnastics team will be honored at the White House later this afternoon (Monday, Sept. 13) in a reception with President Barack Obama.
The 2010 national champion Wolverines will follow their White House visit with a whirlwind tour of the Capitol Building on Tuesday (Sept. 14) where they will meet Michigan senators Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow and Michigan congressman John Dingell. The team will tour Washington, D.C., and the Washington Mall before returning to Ann Arbor.
Continuing a tradition started by President George W. Bush, the White House honors championship teams and student-athletes from across the NCAA with a reception in Washington, D.C., each year. Championship teams and individuals are celebrated for their accomplishments in and out of the classroom and recognized for their contributions to their communities. The Wolverines will be joined by the Purdue women's golf team and the Iowa wrestling team, representing the Big Ten Conference.
Michigan won the program's fourth national title in 2010 and its first since 1999. Led by NCAA all-around winner junior Chris Cameron (Winter Haven, Fla./Lake Region), NCAA high bar champion senior Ryan McCarthy (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville) and five more All-Americans -- seniors Mel Anton Santander (Southborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional), Kent Caldwell (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin) and Phillip Goldberg (Dalton, Ga./McCallie) and juniors Ian Makowske (Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow) and Thomas Kelley (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) -- Michigan captured the university's first national championship since softball took home the top prize in 2005.
