Wolverines Shut Out Minnesota for Seventh Straight Win

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The No. 6-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team ran its winning streak to seven in a row with a 7-0 shutout at Minnesota on Sunday (March 28) at the Baseline Tennis Center. The Wolverines won all nine matches on the afternoon, including all six singles matches in straight sets.
U-M swept all three doubles matches for the second consecutive day, winning 8-2 across the board with the duo of junior Denise Muresan (Lincolnshire, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) and senior Tania Mahtani (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula) ensuring the point for U-M with a win at No. 3.
The Wolverines carried the doubles momentum over, winning all six singles matches for the second time in Big Ten action. Freshman Mimi Nguyen (Long Beach, Calif./Millikan) was the first Wolverine off court in singles, winning 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 4 slot. Junior Rika Tatsuno (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula) quickly followed at No. 3 (6-2, 6-1), allowing Mahtani to clinch the match at No. 5 with a 6-0, 6-4 win.
After the team match was clinched, the Wolverines continued their winning ways with triumphs at Nos. 1, 2 and 6 to complete the nine-match sweep.
The Wolverines will wrap up their seven-match road swing with two more Big Ten matches next weekend. First up is a trip to Evanston, Ill., for a showdown with No. 2 Northwestern on Saturday (April 3). U-M will then head up to Wisconsin for a Sunday (April 4) meeting with the Badgers. Both matches begin at 11 a.m. CDT.
