ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The College Gymnastics Association announced Wednesday (March 24) that senior co-captain David Chan (Singapore, Singapore/Hale School) of the No. 4-ranked Michigan men's gymnastics team is one of eight finalists for this year's Nissen-Emery Award. The award is the highest honor in collegiate men's gymnastics, presented annually since 1966 to an outstanding senior gymnastics competitor for not only athletic accomplishments but also academic performance. The award is based upon the motto, "The true champion seeks excellence physically, mentally, socially and morally."
Other 2010 Nissen-Emery finalists include Jon Buese (Iowa), Aaron Fortunato (Minnesota), Derek Gygax (William and Mary), Nick Noone (Stanford), Kyle Shanahan (Nebraska), Luke Stannard (Illinois) and Andrew Stover (UIC).
Chan is a 2007 NCAA All-American on the vault and a 2008 NCAA All-American on the pommel horse. He is a two-time Big Ten individual event qualifier, including a seventh-place finish on the pommel horse in 2009. Chan captained the squad to a share of the 2009 Big Ten team championship and runner-up finish at the 2009 NCAA Championships and was re-elected captain by his teammates for the 2010 season. Chan, who is also a member of the Singapore national team, earned a bronze medal on the pommel horse at the Southeast Asian Games in 2007.
Fellow co-captain fifth-year Phillip Goldberg (Dalton, Ga./McCallie) was named a Nissen-Emery Award finalist last season. Michigan's only Nissen-Emery Award winner is Justin Toman (1998-2002), who won the award in 2002 and was a six-time NCAA All-America honoree and a two-time NCAA parallel bars champion.
The Wolverines are back in action Friday-Saturday, April 2-3, in Columbus, Ohio, as U-M defends its 2009 Big Ten team championship. The Big Ten Network will air the contest live at 7 p.m. each day.
