ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- After being named Big Ten Gymnast of the Week for the first time in his career earlier this week, senior Mel Anton Santander (Southborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional) of the No. 4-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team earned his second NCAA National Gymnast of the Week honor, awarded by the College Gymnastics Association on Wednesday (March 24). Santander recorded career bests in four events (pommel horse, rings, parallel bars and high bar) en route to his Michigan school-record all-around total of 90.650.
The award is the second for Santander this season; he previously received the honor for his all-around winning performance at the Maize and Blue Intrasquad on Dec. 12, 2009. Junior Chris Cameron (Winter Haven, Fla./Lake Region) last won the national award for the Wolverines on Feb. 11, after finishing as the highest NCAA competitor at the USA Gymnastics Winter Cup Challenge and being named to his third straight U.S. senior national team.
The Wolverines are back in action Friday-Saturday, April 2-3, in Columbus, Ohio, at 7 p.m. when U-M defends its 2009 Big Ten team championship. The Big Ten Network will air the competition live at 7 p.m. each day.
