Michigan Head Coach Red Berenson
On tonight's game ... "The game didn't go the way we thought it would. We expected it to be a real close game. Then [Bryan] Hogan goes down and all of a sudden there is a lot of attention on [Shawn] Hunwick. The team gave him a good game and he gave the team a good game. I can't give you an update on Hogan; right now it looks doubtful [for Saturday]."
On the defensive play ... "The penalty killing was a factor. I thought our team played well defensively. We didn't give up too much and [Shawn] Hunwick made the saves he should make. It was a great senior night. We have had some stinkers on senior night before because there are distractions. It's good to see the seniors on the scoreboard and good to see them have a good home game. It was an important game for our team."
On the importance of scoring the first goal ... "As the game wore on it was always a tight game. With a 2-0 lead going into the third period we knew they were a good team and all they needed was one break or one power-play goal and it's a different game. The game went our way tonight and I feel good about that. We will have to refocus for Saturday, but tonight was a good night for Michigan."
U-M Junior Goalie Shawn Hunwick
On his thinking after Bryan Hogan went down ... "Well, a couple weeks ago he went down and he just popped right back up so that was my first instinct. Then someone looked at me and told me I better start stretching out because it looks serious. Coach [Berenson] said to go in so I went in. We needed this win so there was no opportunity to play bad."
On preparing for game action ... "From the beginning, coach has called me the relief pitcher and different things. He has told me to always be ready and prepare all week like I'm going to play. Me and Blackie (goalie coach Josh Blackburn) prepare like I'm going to play and I just always try to stay sharp."
On support from the Yost crowd ... "It was nice to hear feedback from the fans. This was the first time I've had the opportunity to contribute to the team and it just feels good. I don't want to take anything away from the seniors because this is their night. That first save for me was huge. At the (Dec. 29, 2009) RPI game I didn't see many shots."
U-M Senior Defenseman Chris Summers
On Shawn Hunwick's play in net ... "I can't say enough, especially as a defenseman, when you have a goalie that has played maybe half a period all year in his career to step in like that with the confidence and communication he had just goes to show how hard he works as an individual in practice every week and I'm glad it paid off for him."
On the shutout ... "You don't talk about it being a shutout. A lot of guys think that will jinx it. As long as you are staying committed to defense [you'll be fine]. I stood up on the bench and looked at the defense and said 'let's be committed to D, boys.' That just means getting pucks deep when you have to, not really taking too many chances offensively, and make sure we are making smart plays and helping him defensively."
On scoring the first goal ... "That was huge. It got off to a good start. We had a great first period. I thought we maybe let up in the second a little bit. Anytime that we produce offensively and keep pucks out of our end is huge for confidence."
On Senior Night at Yost ... "I think it was the whole event. Knowing it could be the last game we play at Yost definitely takes a toll on your emotions. Maybe you get a little too antsy, but I think the most important thing was that we stayed calm and confident. I enjoyed the experience and really embraced and soaked it all in."
