ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 1-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team extinguished the No. 11 UIC Flames behind event wins from junior Ian Makowske (Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow), senior Mel Anton Santander (Southborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional) and sophomore Syque Caesar (Port Saint Lucie, Fla./Lincoln Park), 339.250 to 328.850 on Saturday (Feb. 13) at Cliff Keen Arena. Freshman Rohan Sebastian (Oklahoma City, Okla./Bishop McGuinness Catholic) claimed the first all-around crown of his career with a 83.400.
The Wolverines got off to a strong start on the floor, leading UIC 57.250- 52.900. Makowske recorded a 14.550 to lead U-M and take the event crown. Caesar and senior Torrance Laury (Marietta, Ga./McEachern) added matching 14.300 marks, good for second place.
The Wolverines added to their lead on the pommel horse where senior/junior Joe Levine (Springfield, N.J./Columbia) made his collegiate debut by posting a 13.950, earning second-place honors. Santander tied his career best (14.950) to win the event.
On rings, sophomore/freshman Douglass Johnson Jr.(Los Angeles, Calif./Loyola) made his collegiate debut, recording a 13.750. Junior/sophomore Andrew Vance (Plymouth, Mich./Catholic Central) posted a team-best 14.250 to take second place on the event.
On the vault, Michigan extended its lead to more than 10 points behind a nearly stuck double twisting vault from Sebastian. Caesar added a 15.200 in his first appearance on the vault for the season.
In rotation five, Caesar took the parallel bars title with a season-best 14.350 mark. In his first collegiate routine on the parallel bars, Sebastian claimed second place on the event.
Going into the final rotation on the high bar, the Wolverines led UIC, 282.800-276.200. Makowske claimed his second event title of the night, obliterating his previous career best with a 14.950 score. Fifth-year Ryan McCarthy (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville) took second on the event to cement U-M's 10-point victory.
The Wolverines take on the Oklahoma Sooners, currently ranked No. 3, next Saturday (Feb. 20) at 2 p.m. at home in Cliff Keen Arena.
