Wolverines Wrap Up Fall Season at ASU Thunderbird

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Freshman Brooke Bolender (Delray Beach, Fla./Kaplan) advanced to the semifinals of the three-day ASU Thunderbird Invitational and ended the tournament with a 4-1 record as the University of Michigan women's tennis team wrapped up its fall season on Sunday (Nov. 7) at the Whiteman Tennis Center.
Bolender reeled off three consecutive victories to advance to the semifinals, falling to No. 54 Kelcy McKenna of Arizona State in straight sets (6-1, 6-3). The freshman defeated Maja Sujica of San Diego (6-1, 6-1), Hannah James of Arizona State (6-3, 6-2) and Northwestern's Brittany Wowchuk (6-3, 6-4) to reach the final four of the singles main draw. She picked up her final victory of the tourney on Sunday with a 7-6, 6-2 win over Arizona State's Michelle Brycki.
Senior Whitney Taney (Edina, Minn./Edina) and sophomore Mimi Nguyen (Long Beach, Calif./Millikan) both reached the quarterfinals of the singles main draw before bowing out of the tournament. Freshman Sam Critser (Mountain View, Calif./Mountain View) went 4-1, winning four consecutive consolation matches after dropping her first match to No. 80 Pavlina Smatova (7-5, 6-3) of Oregon.
On the doubles front, Michigan compiled a 4-5 record as the pair of Bolender and Taney and duo of Crister and senior Rika Tatsuno (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula) both went 2-1.
The Wolverines will wrap up tournament action after the calendar flips to 2011, hosting the Michigan Invitational, Jan. 15-17. Joining U-M at the Varsity Tennis Center for the round-robin event are Georgia Tech, Tennessee and Washington.
