MADISON, Wis. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team (No. 8 USA Today/No. 8 USCHO) earned a 4-4 tie at Wisconsin (RV USA Today/No. 15 USCHO) on Friday (Nov. 26) at the Kohl Center.
The Wolverines led 2-0, 3-2 and 4-3, but the Badgers scored three power-play goals. U-M had two power-play goals, which came from senior left wing Carl Hagelin (Sodertalje, Sweden) and sophomore right wing Chris Brown (Flower Mound, Texas), who also added an assist.
Michigan opened the scoring at 6:39 of the first period thanks to a major miscue by goalie Brett Bennett. As the goalie tried to pass the puck behind his own net, Brown swooped in behind him for the steal and tried to wrap the puck around the left side. Brown's shot hit the outside of the post, but freshman left wing Luke Moffatt (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) slapped the loose puck past the diving goalie.
Hagelin scored U-M's first power-play goal of November at 8:17 to increase the lead to 2-0. Hagelin banged in his own rebound from the right edge of the crease. Senior defenseman Chad Langlais (Spokane, Wash.) and senior center Matt Rust (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) drew the assists.
The Badgers converted on their first power play of the game at 10:29. Free in the high left slot, Justin Schultz ripped a slap shot through a screen and high over senior goalie Shawn Hunwick (Sterling Heights, Mich.).
Hunwick saw just four shots in the first period, compared to 13 the other way, but his last stop with 1:30 remaining was outstanding. UW's Michael Mersch got a clean breakaway when he stepped out of the penalty box, but Hunwick saved the high shot with his left shoulder and the puck deflected harmlessly into the corner.
Wisconsin knotted the game at 2-2 just 43 seconds into the second period. Gardiner jumped a U-M breakout attempt, skated to the top of the right circle and fired a wrist shot just under the junction of the left post and cross bar.
Michigan bounced back 63 seconds later on a power-play goal by Brown to take a 3-2 lead. Junior defenseman Brandon Burlon (Nobleton, Ontario) flicked a rising shot from the center point and Brown deflected the puck up and over the goalie from between the hash marks.
Four straight Michigan penalties eventually benefited Wisconsin at 11:31. Gardiner scored his second goal of the period on a one-timer from the right circle that glanced off Hunwick as he slid across the crease.
The Wolverines responded as a result of great individual effort from senior center Louie Caporusso (Woodbridge, Ontario) at 17:52. On a faceoff to the right of the UW goalie, Caporusso tipped the puck forward, stepped to the inside of his opposing center and sniped a shot into the top left corner for a 4-3 U-M lead after 40 minutes.
Gardiner completed his hat trick 49 seconds into the third period on a power-play goal. Mark Zengerle eluded two poke checks and fed a wide-open Gardiner in the right circle.
The remainder of the period was full of scoring chances for each team. Senior left wing Scooter Vaughan (Placentia, Calif.) had a partial breakaway and junior left wing David Wohlberg (South Lyon, Mich.) had a look at an open net, but the puck bounced over his stick.
There were two big stops by U-M with 2:30 left in regulation. Hunwick stoned Derek Lee on the doorstep and sophomore center A.J. Treais (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) blocked the rebound with his body from the middle slot.
Michigan took two of the three shots in overtime, but the game ended in a tie.
The Wolverines have a day off before they play No. 15-ranked Minnesota on Sunday (Nov. 28) at Mariucci Arena. Faceoff is 4:35 p.m. CST on the Big Ten Network.
