PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- Three members of the University of Michigan women's soccer team -- senior Jackie Carron (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester) and freshmen Nkem Ezurike (Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia/Sackville) and Meghan Toohey (Philadelphia, Pa./Phil-Mont Christian) -- were recognized with All-Big Ten Conference selections today (Wednesday, Nov. 10). Carron was named All-Big Ten first team and U-M's Big Ten Sportsmanship award recipient, while Ezurike earned a nod to the All-Big Ten second team and a unanimous selection to the Big Ten All-Freshman team. Toohey also earned a spot on the rookie team.
Carron has once again been the cornerstone of the Michigan defense, putting the squad on pace for its fewest goals allowed per game in program history (0.82). A three-time team Most Valuable Player, Carron has been in the starting lineup for each of the last 75 games. An all-conference second team honoree as a junior, Carron has twice been named Academic All-Big Ten and earned the Big Ten Distinguished Scholar award in 2009-10.
Ezurike has made a big splash in her first season with the Wolverines, leading the team with nine goals and 19 points during the regular season. She enters the postseason tied for fourth in Big Ten scoring and tied for seventh in points. Ezurike helped her cause by scoring the game-winning goal in upset conference victories over then-No. 23 Minnesota on Oct. 22 and then-No. 16 Illinois on Oct. 31.
Toohey currently ranks fourth on the Wolverines with eight points and tied for second with four helpers. Seven of her eight points came in conference play, including the game-winner against Iowa on Oct. 29 and an assist on the deciding goal in the 110th minute against the Gophers.
Carron is the first Wolverine to earn first team honors since Melissa Dobbyn (2004-07) was tabbed to the top team in 2005. Ezurike, U-M's first all-freshman team honoree since Natalie Horner (2008), is the first Michigan rookie to earn an All-Big Ten selection since Jamie Artsis (2005-06) did so during the 2005 campaign.
Michigan opens up NCAA Tournament play at No. 6-ranked Oklahoma State on Friday (Nov. 12) at 7:30 p.m. CST in Stillwater, Okla.
