EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team concluded the fall season on Monday (Nov. 1) at the four-day Big Ten Indoors Championships, held at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility. The highlight of the weekend came on Friday (Oct. 29), as the freshman tandem of Barrett Franks (Christchurch, New Zealand/Shirley Boys') and Justin Rossi (Novi, Mich./Laurel Springs Prep) claimed the Flight 'A' doubles title by winning four straight matches.
Freshman Shaun Bernstein (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview Old Bethpage JFK) was the last Michigan player in the field, finishing with a 4-2 record in singles after being eliminated on Monday in the singles semifinals by Jeremy Langer (Indiana), 6-4, 6-3. Rossi and sophomore Chris Cha (Eureka, Mo./University of Missouri H.S.) each reached the third round of the main draw before being eliminated. Franks, junior Duncan Muil (Lake Jackson, Texas/The Kings School) and freshman Alex Buzzi (Key Biscayne, Fla./Gulliver Prep) were also in the field.
The Big Ten Indoors Championships served as the final event for the fall season for everyone on the team other than sophomore Evan King (Chicago, Ill./Kaplan), who will play next week (Thu-Sun., Nov. 4-7) at the USTA/ITA National Indoors Championships in Flushing, N.Y. He is the second straight Michigan player to compete in the event, following an appearance by Jason Jung (Torrance, Calif../West Torrance) last season.
The Wolverines will return to the court following the turn of the New Year at the Key Biscayne Individuals from Jan. 7-9 outside Miami, Fla. The dual-match season kicks off on Jan. 15, as Michigan hosts Western Michigan at the Varsity Tennis Center.

The records for Michigan's players at the event were as follows: Shaun Bernstein (4-2), Barrett Franks (1-2), Alex Buzzi (2-2), Chris Cha (2-1), Duncan Muil (0-2), Justin Rossi (3-1). Though these matches do not count towards individual Big Ten records, Michigan collectively went 12-10 against conference players in singles and 6-2 in doubles. Seniors Jason Jung and Chris Madden did not play in the tournament. Madden has not seen court action all fall.

Associate Head Coach Sean Maymi
On play this weekend ... "I think with a tournament format like this, you get a lot of good and bad. And what I mean by that is, some guys are going to win and some guys are going to lose. I thought the competitiveness and the development of each guy trying to get better and work on things were really good. It was progress and we are moving in the right direction. Obviously, we would have loved to win a couple more matches but as far as progression goes, it was good."
On how Michigan measured up against Big Ten players ... "You know, this tournament is interesting. Some teams send a lot of guys and others don't. When comparing to the bulk, I thought from my perspective that we had a lot of youth. We brought all our freshmen and our oldest guy was Duncan, and it's just as new to him as it is to the rest of them. It was a good experience for them to see where the Big Ten is at and how tough it is going to be once we get there. We've got a lot of room to improve. That's what happens as sophomores and freshmen. You've got room to get better. I think we're right in the thick of things, as far as the level, in the Big Ten, and hopefully by the spring we'll be doing better."
On what U-M players need to improve upon before the dual-match season ... "Each guy is different and has little things to improve upon. Individually, we are getting better. If you look in areas, as a team, we are going to continue to get better in doubles. Certainly we have to get better there. We were strong there last year. This year, though, we lost a couple real good players in Mike Sroczynski and George Navas, and we'll need to have development there. In singles, we need to continue competing and do some of the things they are doing in practice and putting into matches."
On the fall season ... "The fall season always provides a wide range. Not everyone can be winning. We normally put them all in one tournament. Our goal was to have the freshmen get some good solid matches under their belt, which was good for us. We've got a young team, but they've improved, which has been great. Next week, we have Evan [King] going to national indoors, and hopefully he can do well this week and put his stamp at the top of our lineup. Overall, the fall went well, and we are developing, growing. That's our focus at the moment."
