
Taney Tabbed as Captain for 2009-10 Season

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - University of Michigan women's tennis head coach Ronni Bernstein announced today (Friday, Sept. 11) that junior Whitney Taney (Edina, Minn./Edina HS) has been chosen by her teammates as the team captain for the 2009-10 season.
"Whitney is the perfect person to lead our team this year," Bernstein said. "She always puts the team first and has pride in Michigan athletics and what we represent. Teryn (Ashley-Fitch) and I look forward to working with Whitney to make this another successful season for our program."
"I am very excited and honored to be named captain of the tennis team for this year," Taney said. "I look forward to being a part of such a wonderful group of teammates with two great coaches. We are a very hard-working team, and I truly believe that we have the talent to get to the next level and to achieve our goals."
Taney owns a career record of 36-19 in singles and a 53-7 doubles mark. An All-Big Ten Conference selection in 2008, she went 15-10 in singles and 27-6 in doubles in 2009 en route to becoming Michigan's Big Ten sportsmanship honoree. Taney also picked up Academic All-Big Ten and ITA Scholar-Athlete accolades following the 2009 campaign.
Taney and the Wolverines kick off the fall portion of their schedule by hosting the Wolverine Invitational, Oct. 2-4, at the Varsity Tennis Center.
