Team, 11 Individuals Receive CSCAA Academic Accolades

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Four members of the University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team were named Scholar All-Americans for the 2008-09 season by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America, and seven additional Wolverines received honorable mention.
Senior Hannah Smith(Dexter, Mich./Dexter), graduate/senior Caroline Rodriguez(St. Louis, Mo./Lafayette), junior Margaret Kelly(Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) and freshman Krystine Cole(Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) were named Scholar All-Americans. To qualify for the award, each student-athlete must be academically eligible for that year, have taken at least 12 semester hours per term, qualify for the NCAA Championships, and qualify for one of the following academic criterion: a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or better, a semester/quarter GPA of 3.5 or better, or a school-year GPA of 3.5 or better (all on a 4.0 scale).
Five swimmers and two divers off last year's squad were named CSCAA Honorable Mention Scholar All-Americans. Receiving the honor were senior swimmer Payton Johnson(Champaign, Ill./Centennial), junior swimmers Emily Christy(Schwenksville, Pa./Spring-Ford Area Senior), Leigh Cole (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) and Keenan Koss(Southport, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe), junior diver Caitlin Dunphy-Daly(Royal Oak, Mich./Rochester), sophomore/freshman diver Rachael Ropeik(Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) and freshman swimmer Alexa Mehesan(West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley). To qualify for the award, each student-athlete must be academically eligible for that year, have taken at least 12 semester hours per term, achieve the equivalent of a 'B' time standard for the NCAA Championship, and qualify for one of the following academic criterion: a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or better, a semester/quarter GPA of 3.5 or better, or a school-year GPA of 3.5 or better (all on a 4.0 scale).
As a team, the 2008-09 Wolverines also received the 2009 Team Scholar All-American Award. To be eligible, only athletes who appeared on the NCAA squad list during the current semester were eligible and all athletes who competed in any competition for the team must be included. In addition, the team must have a GPA of 3.0 or better for the semester.
