ROME, Italy -- University of Michigan sophomore swimmer Dan Madwed(Stamford, Conn./Towson) received a gold medal for competing in the 4x200-meter freestyle relay at the FINA World Championships (Friday, July 31). Madwed was part of the qualifying team for the United States and earned gold despite not swimming in the finals.
The semifinal relay team was comprised of three Michigan men, with Davis Tarwater (2003-06) and Peter Vanderkaay (2003-06) teaming up with Madwed and Ricky Berens to qualify for the final. The foursome had the fastest time during the heat, touching the wall in 7:03.30. In the 4x200 finals, former U-M volunteer coach and Club Wolverine swimmer Michael Phelps joined the U.S. foursome that won a gold medal and set a new world-record time of 6:58.55.
At the FINA World Championships, in swimming relays when preliminaries are swum, medals are awarded to those swimmers who have participated in the heats or the final.
Madwed, who already took home ninth place in the 400-meter freestyle with a new Michigan standard earlier this week, is the only current Wolverine to medal at the championships. Junior Tyler Clary(Riverside, Calif./Riverside Poly) is slated to compete in the 400-meter individual medley on the final day of competition (Sunday, Aug. 2). Clary finished fifth in the 200-meter butterfly earlier this week.
The FINA World Championships run through Aug. 2.
