
Wolverines Strong on Day Two of NCAA Championships

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Seniors Geena Gall(Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) and Amber Hay(Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) and sophomores Emily Pendleton(Lindsey, Ohio/Woodmore) and Danielle Tauro (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional) of the No. 11-ranked University of Michigan women's track and field team qualified for event finals on Thursday (June 11) on day two of the NCAA Outdoor Championships at John McDonnell Field. Gall advanced to the final of the 800-meter run, Hay qualified for the final in the 400-meter hurdles, Pendleton advanced to the final of the discus throw and Tauro reached the finals in the 1,500-meter run.
Senior Bettie Wade(Northville, Mich./Farmington) also competed Thursday in the first four events of the heptathlon -- she is third after day one -- and senior Tiffany Ofili(Ypsilanti, Mich./Ypsilanti) qualified for the semifinals of the 100-meter hurdles.
In the semifinals of the 800-meter run, Gall ran a season-best time of 2:02.28 to win the first semifinal and qualify for Saturday's (June 13) final. Gall was in control early, taking the lead on the backstretch of the first lap. She continued to push the pace throughout the race, leading wire to wire and winning by a comfortable margin of 1.09 seconds over second-place LaTavia Thomas of Louisiana State. Tennessee's Phoebe Wright, the winner of the second semifinal, was second overall with a time of 2:02.56.
Hay earned a spot in the 400-meter hurdle finals with a fourth-place finish, 58.20, in the second semifinal. After being the final at-large selection into the championships, Hay continued her improbable run into Friday night's (June 12) final by holding off a late charge by TCU's Kishelle Paul for the last qualifying spot. Hay beat Paul to the line by nine one-thousandths of a second. Nicole Leach of UCLA is the top qualifier in the final with a time of 55.83.
Pendleton advanced to Saturday's finals in the discus throw with a top mark of 167-2 (50.96m) in the qualifying round. Competing in the second of two flights, Pendleton achieved her top throw of the day with her first of three attempts. Jere' Summers of Louisville recorded the top qualifying mark with a toss of 183-2 (55.83m).
Running in the second of three semifinals in the 1,500 meters, Tauro earned a spot in the final with a third-place finish of 4:18.66. Tauro was among the top three throughout the first half of her race before falling back to fifth as the pace quickened in the final two laps. Still sitting fifth coming to the home stretch, Tauro was able to use a strong final kick to overtake two runners and claim an automatic berth into the final. The top overall finisher was Heidi Dahl of East Tennessee State (4:14.92), the winner of the first semifinal.
Wade scored 3,601 points in the first four events of the heptathlon to finish day one of the competition in third, just 62 points behind first-place Nia Ali of Southern California (3,663).
In the first event of the heptathlon, the 100-meter hurdles, Wade was first across the line in her section, and 10th overall, with a time of 13.84, scoring 1,001 points. Ali took first overall with a time of 13.17 for 1,099 points. Wade tied for third in the high jump, scoring 953 points after clearing 5-10 (1.78m) on her second attempt at the height. Cincinnati's Jasmine Cotten and Minnesota's Liz Roehrig each cleared 5-11 1/4 (1.81m) to lead the competition and score 991 points.
The highest-placing finish of the day for Wade came in the shot put, where she recorded the second-best throw among all competitors, 44-6 1/4 (13.57m), to score 765 points. The top throw of the day was recorded by Annett Wichmann of Hawaii, 45-2 1/4 (13.77m) for 779 points. In the final heptathlon event of the day, the 200-meter dash, Wade finished fourth in her section, and 16th overall, with a time of 25.05 to score 882 points. Ali finished first in 23.90, scoring 990 points.
Ofili cruised through her first-round heat in the 100-meter hurdles, winning in 13.07 seconds. Running in the second of four heats, Ofili was first out of the blocks and led wire to wire. She advances to Friday evening's semifinals as the top overall seed, one one-thousandth of a second faster than the second-fastest qualifier, Gabby Mayo of Texas A&M.
The Maize and Blue will have four athletes competing on Friday's (June 12) third day of the NCAA Championships at John McDonnell Field. The first Wolverine to compete will be Wade in the final three events of the heptathlon, beginning at 1:45 p.m. CDT. Also in action will be senior Casey Taylor(Chicago Heights, Ill./Marian Catholic) in the qualifying round of the triple jump at 3 p.m., Ofili in the semifinals of the 100-meter hurdles at 6:55 p.m. and Hay in the final of the 400-meter hurdles at 7:55 p.m.
