WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- University of Michigan women's golf junior Ashley Bauer(Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS) was named to the All-Big Ten second team today (Sunday, April 26) at the postseason awards ceremony following the completion of the Big Ten Championships.
"This is a huge honor," said Bauer. "It was one of the goals I had set for myself at the beginning of the season. The girl's push me so much every day. To be just the ninth Wolverine to receive the award is such a great honor, since there have been so many great players to come through here. There are a lot of great golfers in this conference and to be recognized as one of them is special. I worked hard all year and throughout my career, but this couldn't have been done without my teammates. This award is as much theirs as it is mine."
Bauer becomes just the ninth Wolverine in U-M history to earn the conference accolade joining Kim Benedict (2002), Brianna Broderick (2005, '07), Shannon McDonald (1996), Laura Olin (2004, '05), Sharon Park (1997), Amy Schmucker (2006), Ali Stinson (2005) and Wendy Westfall (1997).
"This is such a great honor for Ashley," said U-M head coach Kathy Teichert. "She has worked so hard this season as a leader and as a player and to have her get the acknowledgement for that is just fantastic to see. It's been great to coach her. She has a side of her determination that sometimes goes unnoticed. She walks quietly but has a loud game. She is very competitive and wants to succeed on all fronts, both as a person and a player. I am just really happy for her."
In her third season, Bauer started 12 tournaments to extend her consecutive streak to 35 straight events, not missing a tournament in her three seasons in Ann Arbor. She leads U-M with a 76.20 stroke average during the 2008-09 campaign and has six top-10 finishes in 12 events. Overall, she has finished as the top Wolverine in seven events. One of her many highlights this season was shooting a career-best, three-under 68 in the first round of the 2008 Wolverine Invitational, tying the U-M record for a single-round tally and becoming the fifth member of U-M's 68 Club.
For her career, she continues to be the 'model of consistency' for the Wolverines. Her current career average of 76.42 is the best for any golfer in U-M history. In 35 career events, she has posted 20 top-20 individual finishes and 13 in the top 10. She earned her first collegiate win in the season-opening 2008 Wolverine Invitational.
With the Big Ten Championships completed, the Wolverines will await the decision this Monday (April 27) at 4 p.m. from the NCAA committee on whether or not they will be a regional selection. The NCAA Regional is slated for Thursday through Saturday (May 7-9) with three sites -- University of Florida Golf Club in Gainesville, Fla. (East), Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz. (West), and The Scarlet Course at Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio (Central).
