WACO, Texas -- The No. 19-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision at No. 5 Baylor on Friday (March 6) at the Baylor Tennis Center. The Wolverines (5-4)surrendered the doubles point for the first time in four matches and claimed just two of the six matches in singles play during their first-ever meetingwiththe Bears (6-3).
Baylor jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a pair of 8-4 victories at the top two doubles positions. Senior Lindsey Howard(Richmond, Va./Mills E. Godwin HS) and sophomore Denise Muresan(Lincolnshire, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson HS) built a 6-1 lead at No. 3 before Nina Secerbegovic and Kasia Siwosz stormed back to win seven of the next nine games to force a tiebreak, which the Baylor duo won by a 7-5 count.
The Bears strung together four straight wins in singles action to wrap up the team victory. Freshman Michelle Sulahian(Valley Glen, Calif./Campbell Hall School) returned to the lineup for the first time in three matches and posted a 6-2, 3-6, 1-0(4) triumph over Siwosz at No. 6 for U-M's first team point. It was a similar story for senior Chisako Sugiyama(Parsippany, N.J./The Montclair Kimberley Academy), who outlasted 32nd-ranked Taylor Ormond in a super-tiebreakat No. 2, 6-2, 3-6, 1-0(9), to close out the match. With the victory, Sugiyama moved into sole possession of second place on Michigan'scareer singles wins list with 96. She needs just five more wins to become the program's all-time leader in career victories.
The Wolverines close out the weekend against Texas Christian on Sunday (March 8) in Forth Worth, Texas. The match is scheduled for an 11 a.m. CDT start at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
