Senior Scott Bregman (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence Free State) takes some time to discuss the upcoming Big Ten Championships being held in Ann Arbor this Friday and Saturday, April 3-4, at 7 p.m. in Crisler Arena. Each day leading up to the event, a Michigan gymnast will be blogging about the team and its preparation for the competition. In his first meet of the season -- after taking some time off due to injury -- Bregman took home the floor title with a 14.850 against Iowa on Jan. 30. Head coach Kurt Golder has said that Bregman "has the potential to be an All-American and Big Ten finalist" in both floor and vault.
Five days. That's all the board in our locker room has to say. Five days until the Big Ten Championships start. Five days until all of our hard work this season pays off. The postseason has arrived, and we're ready.
Postseason is an interesting time for gymnasts. By this point in the season, we've done all of our routines countless times. We're at the point where warming up is almost unnecessary -- our bodies know exactly what they need to do. This confidence and security has allowed us the freedom to focus on perfection -- clean form, sticking landings. And it's these little details that will surely make the difference this week when we march into Crisler Arena, especially in a conference championship with teams like No.4 Illinois, No. 5 Michigan, No.6 Penn State, No.7 Ohio State, No.8 Minnesota and No. 10 Iowa!
Last week's practices really were nothing short of spectacular. Coming off our season high ON THE ROAD at Ohio State has really energized and lifted the confidence of our team. During the week, we executed tons of routines at an exceptionally high level, including fantastic showings in intrasquad competitions on pommel horse, parallel bars and high bar -- all while keeping that laidback, fun atmosphere that we drove us to victory against the Buckeyes.
This week, we hope to keep the same momentum going. We'll get our first test of the equipment in Crisler during practices on Wednesday and Thursday. Then, Friday night is the big show -- the Big Ten team competition! Everyone should try to make it out to Crisler, where you'll see some of the most difficult gymnastics in the country being performed and where you'll have a chance to cheer on the Wolverines to their first Big Ten title since 2000.
