ANN ARBOR, Mich.-- The No. 19-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team extended its home winning streak to23 matchesthanks to acommanding 6-1 victory over No. 72 Iowa Sunday afternoon (March 22) on the outdoor courts at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Wolverines (8-4, 3-0 Big Ten) earned their first doubles sweep of the season and followed with straight-set wins in five of the six singles matches to run away with their fifth straight victory over the Hawkeyes (7-7, 2-1 Big Ten).
Senior Lindsey Howard(Richmond, Va./Mills E. Godwin HS) and sophomore Denise Muresan(Lincolnshire, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson HS) needed just 21 minutes to complete an 8-0win over Jennifer Barnes and Alexis Dorr at No. 3 doubles. U-M's No. 31-ranked duo of senior Chisako Sugiyama(Parsippany, N.J./The Montclair Kimberley Academy) and junior Tania Mahtani(Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula HS) clinched the team's seventh doubles point of the year with an 8-3 triumph over Sonja Molnar and Jessica Young at No. 1. Sophomores Whitney Taney(Edina, Minn./Edina HS) and Rika Tatsuno(Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula HS) wrapped up the sweep by outlasting Kelcie Klockenga and Lynne Poggensee-Wei ina tiebreak at No. 2, 8-7(4). Taney and Tatsuno won seven of the final nine points in the tiebreak.
Mahtani made quick work of her opponent at No. 3 singles, earning an easy 6-3, 6-1 over Poggensee-Wei to give Michigan a 2-0 advantage. Freshman Michelle Sulahian(Valley Glen, Calif./Campbell Hall School) moved the Wolverines within one win of the team victory with a 6-3, 6-2 decision over Ally Majercik at No. 6, and Taney provided the clincher with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph over Klockenga at No. 4.
U-M was victorious on two of the three remaining courts, with Muresan picking up a 7-6(4), 6-2 win over Young at No. 5 and Tatsuno securing a 7-6(7), 6-4 decision over Dorr at No. 2.
