EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team set three pool records while concluding its regular season with a 176-109 victory over Michigan State on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 8) at McCaffree Pool. Junior Chris Brady(Wilmington, Del./Mount Pleasant) broke the pool record in the 100-yard butterfly and was also a part of both the 200-yard medley and freestyle relays that turned in pool-record performances.
The win caps a perfect Big Ten dual-meet season for the Wolverines (6-0) and extends U-M's dual-meet winning streak over the Spartans to 31 seasons.
In the 100-yard butterfly, Brady touched the wall in 47.70 to win the event and in the process broke the 37-year-old McCaffree Pool record held by Mark Spitz (49.31, 1972). Brady was also a member of the pool record-setting quartet in the 200-yard medley relay along with junior Adam DeJong(Holland, Mich./Holland), junior Jonathan Hiett(Federal Way, Wash./Todd Beamer) and senior Bobby Savulich(Edison, N.J./Saint Joseph). The Wolverines' winning time of 1:30.37 bettered the previous pool record of 1:31.03, set by Indiana in 2005.
Brady then teamed with sophomore Noah Whitener (Saline, Mich./Saline), senior Curtis Dauw(St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) and senior Sal Barba(Hudson, Mass./St. Johns) in winning the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:23.38. The previous McCaffree pool record in the event was 1:23.57, set by a quartet from Michigan State in 1992.
Freshman Dan Madwed(Stamford, Conn./Towson) earned first place in a pair of events. Madwed first won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 50.55 and then led a 1-2 finish with Dauw in the 200-yard individual medley. Madwed was first to the wall in 1:51.96 and Dauw clocked in at 1:52.51 for runner up.
Senior Matt Patton(Matthews, N.C./Butler) also won a pair of events, getting to the wall first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:38.79) and taking top honors in the 200-yard backstroke (1:48.39).
Hiett teamed with sophomore James Ridgeway(Chicago, Ill./Saint Patrick) to help U-M take both first and second in the 100-yard breaststroke. Hiett finished with a season-best time of 55.08, while Ridgeway took second in 55.39, also a season-best time.
Freshman Jason Austermann (Huntington Woods, Mich./Berkley) and senior Jamie Martone(Troy, Mich./Troy) both achieved a season-best time en route to winning the 1,650-yard and 50-yard freestyle events, respectively. Austermann was first to the wall in 15:43.43 in the mile, while Martone earned top honors in the splash and dash in 20.23 seconds.
Also victorious in the pool were Savulich in the 100-yard freestyle with a winning time of 44.96 and DeJong in the 500-yard freestyle, clocking in at 4:30.77
In the diving well, the Wolverines swept the top two spots in both the one- and three-meter events. Senior Kyle Schroeder (Milan, Mich./Milan) earned first place with a score of 329.99 in the one-meter and 373.57 in the three-meter. Freshman Chris Morrison(Fenton, Mich./Fenton) took second in both events, scoring 261.44 on the one-meter board and 280.20 in the three-meter event.
The Wolverines will return to the pool Thu-Sat., Feb. 26-28, when they travel to the Big Ten Championships at Purdue University's Boilermaker Aquatic Center. U-M is the defending Big Ten champion and will be in search of its 34th all-time conference title.

Michigan Head Coach Mike Bottom
On the meet... "It was a solid meet. Like I said to the team, they have had better performances. I think they are looking forward to Big Tens and NCAAs, which are two weeks away. They are starting to focus elsewhere and it showed today. There were also some good highlights, Chris Brady breaking that record (100 butterfly); the relays both broke records. This is not an easy pool to swim in; that is why they had to keep their focus. The turns are a little difficult; it's only six lanes.
On looking ahead to the upcoming championship season... "I think we have a great shot to take a big team to NCAAs. If we could take 15 guys to NCAAs -- I don't think we have taken that many in a long time -- my hope is to take 15 or more guys to the NCAAs. I think if we can do that and get in the top five, we will have had a great year."
U-M Junior Chris Brady
On his record-breaking 100-yard butterfly performance... "It was exciting because it was Mark Spitz, everyone knows who he is. It's probably his last record, at least in college, so it's exciting to do because of who he is and what he has done, so its special."
