LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Six current members of the No. 3-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team advanced to the 2009 Winter Cup Challenge finals on Thursday (Feb. 5) at the Las Vegas Sports Center. Preseason All-Big Ten sophomore Chris Cameron (Winter Haven, Fla./Lake Region) paced the Wolverines, ending the preliminary round in sixth place with 94 points to advance to the finals on Saturday (Feb. 7). Fifth-year senior Paul Woodward (Tallahassee, Fla./Lawton Chiles HS), senior Ralph Rosso(Morganville, N.J./St. John Vianney HS), senior/junior captain Phillip Goldberg(Dalton, Ga./McCallie HS), junior Mel Anton Santander(Southborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional HS) and sophomore Thomas Kelley(Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville HS) also advanced to the finals.
Cameron finished in ninth in the all-around with an 84.850 total, powered by a third-place 14.900 on rings and a fourth-place 14.750 on parallel bars.
Santander and Woodward registered season highs on pommel horse, earning 14.750 (t-2nd) and 14.400 (6th), respectively.
Senior/junior Ryan McCarthy(Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville Community) posted 13.100 on pommel horse, 11.300 on parallel bars and 11.950 on horizontal bar during the preliminary round but did not qualify for the finals.
U-M alum and four-time All-American Justin Laury (2003-07) closed the preliminary round with 54 points to rank 23rd, scoring 82.050 in the all-around, 14.400 on floor, 11.150 on pommel horse, 14.500 on still rings, 14.650 on vault, 13.200 on parallel bars and 14.150 on horizontal bar. Meanwhile, former Michigan student-athlete Edward Umphrey (2002-05) marked 12.750 on floor, 14.000 on rings, a U-M event-best 15.450 on vault and 12.950 on parallel bars, but the 2005 All-American on floor did not advance to the event finals.
Overall scores were calculated through a performance-based points-ranking system to determine which athletes would reach the top 42 and advance to the finals.
Following Saturday's competition, the top seven gymnasts will receive a spot on the U.S. Men's Senior National team and up to eight other competitors could receive an invitation to join the national squad. Members selected will serve with the national team leading up to the 2009 Visa Championships this August.
While the Winter Cup Challenge contestants compete in the event finals, the rest of the third-ranked Wolverines will face off against No. 11 UIC on Saturday (Feb. 7) at Cliff Keen Arena. The meet is scheduled to begin at 7 pm. EST.
