ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 19-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team got back on a winning track with a 5-2 victory over No. 49 Harvard on Friday night (Feb. 20) at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Wolverines (6-4) captured the doubles point and wins at the bottom four singles positions to clinch their fifth straight victory over the Crimson (4-2) and extend their home winning streak to 13 matches.
Sophomore Chris Madden (Lotus, Calif./Ponderosa HS) and sophomore/freshman Drew Daniel (Overland Park, Kan./Laurel Springs School) needed just 25 minutes to give U-M the early momentum in doubles, as the pair cruised to an easy 8-3 win over Davis Mangham and Aba Omodele-Lucien at No. 3. Madden and Daniel have won a team-high six dual matches this season.
Competing together for the first time since the 2007 season, juniors George Navas (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Preparatory School) and Mike Sroczynski (Chatham, N.J./Laurel Springs School) provided Michigan with its first team point by posting an 8-6 victory over Alexei Chijoff-Evans and Chris Clayton at No. 1. The Wolverine duo broke Clayton's serve to take a 2-1 lead and then took care of its five remaining service games to clinch the doubles point for the Maize and Blue. Navas and Sroczynski hold a 21-6 career record as a doubles team.
The U-M win at No. 1 proved to be crucial, as Harvard's Alistair Felton and Michael Hayes squeaked out a 9-8(6) triumph to spoil senior Andrew Mazlin (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Lyman HS) and sophomore Jason Jung's (Torrance, Calif./West Torrance HS) career debut at No. 2.
Senior Peter Aarts (Pound Ridge, N.Y./Fox Lane HS) gave Michigan a 2-0 advantage just 47 minutes into singles action, as he handily defeated Hayes by a score of 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3. Madden brought the Wolverines within one point of the team win with a dominating 6-3, 6-0 decision over Robertson McAnulty at No. 6.
Sroczynski got back in the win column with a solid 7-5, 6-2 triumph over Mangham at No. 4, clinching the team victory for Michigan. Jung and Mazlin both won their first set at Nos. 1 and 2, respectively, but ended up falling short in a super-tiebreaker. Daniel closed out the match in winning form, slipping by Omodele-Lucien in a super-tiebreaker at No. 5, 6-4, 6-7(9), 1-0(4). Daniel carries a team-best 8-1 mark in dual-match play.
The Wolverines will spend Spring Break in Malibu, Calif., where they will face Pepperdine on Wednesday (Feb. 25) and Washington on Friday (Feb. 27). Both matches are scheduled for a 1 p.m. PST start at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.
