The Wolverines moved to 3-1 all-time against the Cardinals with tonight's victory. Michigan has a 72-50 record against schools from the MAC.
Today was junior guard Veronica Hicks' 20th birthday. Today's game marked the second time that the Wolverines played a game on Veronica's birthday. In her freshman season, U-M defeated Cincinnati 55-46 at Crisler. U-M moves to 2-0 when playing on Hicks' birthday.
The Wolverines moved to 22-15 all-time in season openers and 22-14 all-time in home openers. Michigan is a perfect 3-0 in season openers under Kevin Borseth.
U-M's 87 points marked its largest scoring output since scoring 98 points in a 98-55 victory over Fordham during the 2005-06 season. The 87 points are also the most points U-M has scored under the tutelage of Kevin Borseth. Prior to today's game, the most points the Wolverines had scored was 82 in an 82-61 win over Southern California during the 2007-08 season.
Michigan played each of its 13 players in tonight's game. Each of U-M's six freshmen played and each recorded at least one point.
Tonight's game also marked the return of fifth-year senior Ashley Jones. Jones, who sat out last season with injury, made her return at the 17:02 mark and had three points and four rebounds in her first game since March 30, 2008.
The Wolverines ended an eight-game losing streak with tonight's victory. The streak, which dated back to last season, was the longest losing streak in head coach Kevin Borseth's tenure at Michigan. U-M's last victory prior to tonight's game was a 70-42 win over Wisconsin on Feb. 1.
For the second consecutive season, a U-M freshman made her collegiate debut with double figures. Dayeesha Hollins led all U-M freshmen with 12 points. Last season, Courtney Boylan had 18 points in her collegiate debut.
Michigan is now seven victories from reaching 400 program wins. Michigan has an all-time record of 393-575.
