SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team opened up the 2009-10 season in impressive fashion, placing first at the Dennis Stark Relays in South Bend, Ind., Friday evening. The night's competition consisted only of relay teams, yet the Wolverines managed to win nine of the meet's 10 races.
Senior Natasha Moodie (Miramar, Fla./Miramar) swam the last leg in four of the five races, while 2008 NCAA Champion Emily Brunemann (Crescent Springs, Ky./Notre Dame Academy) led Michigan in the 800-yard freestyle and the 1000-yard freestyle relays.
The Dennis Stark Relays also marked the first collegiate competition for seven of Michigan's freshmen swimmers. Mattie Kukors (Auburn, Wash./Mountainview) swam three races, Julia Andracki (Arlington Heights, Ill./Prospect) swam two, and Kally Fayhee (North Aurora, Ill./Rosary), Val Barthelemy (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer), Deirdre Jones (Nashville, Tenn./University School of Nashville), Ashley Cohagen (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) and Melissa Lang (Edison, N.J./Bishop George) all swam one race each.
Michigan will look to build off the momentum tomorrow (Saturday, Oct. 10), when they square off against Notre Dame in its first dual meet of the year. The meet is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m.

The 400-yard Breaststroke team consisted of three freshmen: Andracki, Lang and Barthelemy.
Brunemann and fellow senior Emily Hanson (Bloomington, Ill./Normal Community) were pegged to swim the one long-distance race, the 1000-yard freestyle. This summer, Brunemann and Hanson were chosen to represent Team USA at the FINA World Championships in Rome, Italy, swimming in two long-distance, open water races.
Michigan was nearly perfect Friday, with their only second-place finish coming in the 200-yard medley relay, where the group finished less than a second short (0.94) of first place.
