ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Junior forward Justin Meram (Shelby Township, Mich. /Yavapai College) had a last-second shot as time expired but could not find the back of the net as the University of Michigan men's soccer team dropped a heartbreaking 1-0 decision to No. 14 Indiana in Big Ten Conference action on Saturday (Oct. 10) at the U-M Soccer Complex.

U-M outshot Indiana, 12-10, and was led by Meram, who tallied four shots, including one on goal in the loss. Senior forward Mauro Fuzetti (Houston, Texas/Stratford), the other half of U-M's offensive tandem, also recorded three shots. U-M junior/sophomore goalkeeper Chris Blais (Seattle, Wash. /Kennedy Memorial) made two saves on the afternoon.
Starting the second half tied at 0-0, U-M came out firing and nearly took a lead on a header from freshman midfielder Latif Alashe (Northville, Mich. /Northville), but IU's Luis Soffner came out of the goal and made a big save to preserve the tie. The game remained tied for five more minutes before the Hoosiers took the lead as Indiana's Andy Adlard scored in the 54th minute, capitalizing on a miscue in the U-M backfield and placing the ball past Blais into the lower left corner.
U-M kept fighting and had a prime opportunity in the 80th minute when IU's goalkeeper Luis Soffner touched the ball outside of the box, giving the Wolverines a free kick just outside the goal box. However, freshman midfielder Hamoody Saad (Dearborn, Mich. /Dearborn) could not convert.
The first half was relatively uneventful for both teams as neither squad had a shot until the 31st minute, but it was the Wolverines who had the first scoring opportunity of the game. Right before a television timeout, Meram collected the ball in the midfield on a nice pass from Fuzetti and hit a nice strike but sent it just wide. Meram had another prime opportunity right after the television break when, after getting a service in the box, he had a chance to one-time it past Soffner but misjudged the shot and came up short, keeping the game tied at 0-0.
The Wolverines next hit the pitch on Wednesday (Oct. 14) when they travel to Cincinnati, Ohio, to take on Cincinnati in a midweek game at Gettler Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

NOTES
• With today's victory over the Wolverines, Indiana holds a 13-1-1 series advantage and moves to 5-0 all-time in Ann Arbor.
• The loss is U-M's first at the U-M Soccer Complex this season. The Wolverines entered today's game with a 5-0 record at their home field.
• Today's shutout is only the third shutout loss this season for the Wolverines. In fact, all of U-M's losses this season have come by shutout.
• This is the fourth regular-season meeting between the Wolverines and Hoosiers that has been decided by one goal. Michigan and Indiana tied 2-2 during the 2005 season.
• Michigan falls to 0-5-1 on the Big Ten Network. Today's meeting was the second time the Wolverines and Hoosiers have met on the Big Ten Network with Indiana winning both contests.
• The Wolverines are 7-0-0 this season when senior forward Mauro Fuzetti scores a goal. The only times Fuzetti has not scored a goal have been in a 5-1 win at Western Michigan (Sept. 19) and the four games U-M has been shut out: losses to Notre Dame (Sept. 1), Penn State (Sept. 27) and Indiana (today), as well as a 0-0 tie with Oakland (Sept. 30).
QUOTES
Michigan Head Coach Steve Burns
On the game ... "I'll say what our players all feel: We let this one slip away from us. We expected to have a more difficult time today. We came out strong and should have put the game away in the first half. When you don't do that and you allow a good team to hang around, you are asking for trouble. Both our central defenders, (Adam) Keller and Jules (Julian Robles), played great today. Part of our midfield came a little unnerved in the second half and the attacking players couldn't quite pick up the slack."
