
Wade Hits Automatic Qualifying Mark in Pentathlon Win

YPSILANTI, Mich. -- Senior co-captain Bettie Wade (Northville, Mich./Farmington) of the No. 3-ranked University of Michigan women's track and field team met the NCAA automatic-qualifying mark with 4,195 points as she took first place in the pentathlon on Friday (Jan. 30) at the Michigan Intercollegiate in Bowen Field House. Freshman Tofunmi Akeredolu(Southfield, Mich. /Lathrup) took sixth in the pentathlon with 3,285 points.
Wade took the top spot in all five events, beginning with a victory in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.62 seconds, nearly three-tenths of a second ahead of the field. Akeredolu took third in 9.09.
In the high jump, Wade tied for the top spot with Erika Schroll of Central Michigan at 1.73m; Akeredolu earned fifth with a leap of 1.58m.
The shot put was dominated by Wade as she recorded a top throw of 13.16m, nearly three meters farther than Ashley Schinske of Detroit (10.35m). Akeredolu recorded another top-five mark with a top throw of 9.61m.
Wade and Akeredolu then swept the top two spots in the long jump with Wade registering a top leap of 5.89m and Akeredolu posting 5.48m.
Wade finished her NCAA qualifying pentathlon with a winning 800-meter time of 2:24.81.
The Wolverines will return to Eastern Michigan on Saturday (Jan. 31) for the final day of the Michigan Intercollegiate. Competition will begin at noon.
