KEY LARGO, Fla. -- The No. 4-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team had a dominating performance on Saturday (Jan. 3) at the Orange Bowl Classic, winning all 11 events it competed in at the Jacobs Aquatics Center. Sophomores Tyler Clary(Riverside, Calif./Riverside Poly) and Neal Kennedy(Chanhassen, Minn./Chaska) and senior Bobby Savulich(Edison, N.J./Saint Joseph) each won a pair of individual events for the Wolverines.
Swimming in meters for the first time this season, U-M started strong in the 200 medley relay, taking the top two spots. The Michigan quartet of junior Alon Mandel(Netanya, Israel/Eldad), sophomore James Ridgeway (Chicago, Ill./Saint Patrick), junior Chris Brady(Wilmington, Del./Mount Pleasant) and Savulich earned top honors in 1:42.03.
Senior Matt Patton(Matthews, N.C./Butler) took the first individual crown of the day with a victory in the 400 freestyle. Patton touched the wall in 3:59.24, leading a top-three sweep as junior Adam DeJong(Holland, Mich./Holland) took second in 4:00.48 and junior Charlie Houchin(Raleigh, N.C./William G. Enloe) was third in 4:06.59.
Brady then took the top honors in the 50 butterfly, winning in a time of 24.52. Senior Curtis Dauw(St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) was second in 26.10.
In the third event of the day, Clary earned the first of his two individual-event victories, finishing first in the 100 backstroke with a time of 56.08 and leading another top-three sweep for Michigan. Mandel was second in 56.18 and junior Andr Schultz(Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Palmares) was third in 56.73. Clary also took the top spot in the 50 backstroke, touching the wall in 26.81. Schultz finished second in the 50 in 27.25 as the Wolverines once again went 1-2-3; Houchin was third in 27.52.
Kennedy and Ridgeway took the top two spots in both of the breaststroke events. Kennedy won the 50 in a time of 29.46 and took the top spot in the 100 in 1:04.81. Ridgeway was second in both events, touching the wall in 30.33 in the 50 and 1:06.13 in the 100.
In the individual-freestyle events, Savulich swept the top spot in both races. The senior tri-captain took first in the 100 in 50.01 and later earned first in the 50 in 22.85. Senior Jamie Martone(Troy, Mich./Troy) took third in the 100 with a time of 54.51 and second in the 50 in 23.84. In the 50-meter race, Brady made it another 1-2-3 sweep for Michigan with a third-place finish of 24.46.
In another top-three U-M sweep, freshman Dan Madwed(Stamford, Conn./Towson) led the Maize and Blue to a victory in the 100 butterfly, touching the wall in 56.18. Dauw was second in 57.42 and Patton took third in 58.06.
Schultz completed the individual event victories for U-M with a first-place finish in the 200 individual medley. Schultz took the win in 2:05.67, Madwed was second in 2:10.59 and Mandel completed Michigan's sixth individual-event top-three sweep by finishing third with a time of 2:11.62 The meet concluded with the 200 freestyle relay and again the Maize and Blue swept the top-three spots. Houchin, Brady, Martone and Savulich earned the victory with a time of 1:32.69.
The Wolverines will return to action next Saturday (Jan. 10) when they travel to face Indiana at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatics Center in Bloomington, Ind. The meet is scheduled to begin at noon.
