ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- With steady rains falling all morning and spreading into the afternoon, course conditions at U-M Golf Course became unplayable forcing the first and second rounds of the 2008 Wolverine Invitational to be canceled today (Sept. 13). Play will be reduced to a final 18 holes on Sunday, Sept. 14, with a 9 a.m. shotgun start.
With rain expected in the forecast, the first round saw drizzling rain as all 13 teams spread out to designated hole assignments on the U-M Golf Course. As the rain began to pick up through the late morning, course conditions started to worsen. Players were called off the course around 10:45 a.m., just as the rain picked up. After a two-hour delay and the rain still falling, the course was re-evaluated and deemed unplayable, canceling the first 36 holes.
With the tournament reduced to 18 holes, team assignments will stay the same in the final round with Michigan, Illinois State and SMU paired together. Minnesota, Eastern Michigan and Ferris State will follow with Toledo, Bucknell and Oakland next on the course. Detroit-Mercy, Indiana State and invited individuals and Eastern Kentucky, Kennesaw State and the U-M individuals will round out the pairing sheet.
In the history of the Wolverine Invitational, on only one other occasion was the tournament reduced to 18 holes. In 1981, the 36-hole event was reduced to just 18 holes due to inclement weather conditions.
