EUGENE, Ore. -- Junior Tiffany Ofili(Ypsilanti, Mich./Ypsilanti HS) of the University of Michigan women's track and field team narrowly missed qualifying for the 100-meter hurdles final, and former Wolverine Lindsey Gallo (2002-05) placed sixth in the 1,500-meter run final Sunday (July 6) on the last day of the USATF Olympic Trials at Oregon's Hayward Field.
Ofili clocked a time of 12.76 to finish fifth in the first semifinal heat, missing advancement by one one-hundredth of a second as Virginia Powell (12.75) nabbed the heat's fourth and final qualifying spot. Ofili's best time is 12.73, which she set in the preliminary round of the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Championships. Lolo Jones won the U.S. championship with a time of 12.29, the fastest American time posted this season.
Needing a top-three finish and an Olympic "A" standard time (4:07.00) to make the Olympic team, Gallo finished sixth in the 1,500-meter run final with a time of 4:15.96. She won her semifinal heat Friday with the third-fastest time of the semifinal round (4:12.54) to qualify for the final.
Ofili and Gallo were bidding to join former Wolverine Anna Willard (2007) on the USA Olympic team. Willard punched her ticket to the Beijing Olympics by winning the 3,000-meter steeplechase Thursday (July 3), crossing the line in 9:27.59 to break the American, USA Olympic Trials, and stadium records.
