WINDSOR, Ontario -- Former University of Michigan women's track and field standout Nicole Forrester (1996-99) punched her ticket to the Beijing Olympics by winning the women's high jump on the final day of the 2008 Canadian Olympic Trials, held Thursday through Sunday (July 3-6) at University of Windsor Stadium.
Forrester, who won the Canadian high jump championship for the third straight year and sixth time overall, wrapped up the title when she cleared 1.85 meters (6-0 3/4) but still needed to achieve the Olympic "A" standard of 1.95m (6-4 3/4) to qualify for the Olympics.
After clearing 1.88m on her first attempt and needing two tries to clear 1.91, Forrester missed her first two attempts at 1.95m before making it on her final try to secure her first Olympics berth, setting the Canadian Track and Field Championships and stadium records in the process. She then aimed to set a new personal record by pushing the bar up to the 6-6 3/4 (2.00m) mark, but she had to settle for being one inch shy of her own record of 6-5 3/4 (1.97m).
On Saturday, senior Nicole Edwards(Winnipeg, Manitoba/Vincent Massey) placed third in the 1,500-meter run final with a personal-record time of 4:12.34, but she fell short of the Olympic "A" standard (4:07.00). U-M alumna Courtney Babcock (1992-96), an Olympian in the 1,500- and 5,000-meter events in 2004, also competed in the 1,500m and finished 10th (4:27.97).
