SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The University of Michigan women's rowing team concluded its 2008 campaign this morning (Sunday, June 1) as its No. 10-ranked first varsity eight placed fifth in the petite final -- 11th overall -- at the NCAA Championships.
Virginia, which barely missed out on the grand final yesterday, jumped out to a quarter-length lead on the rest of the field in the opening 500 meters, with Harvard its closest competitor. Michigan was three-quarters of a length behind UVA in sixth place. The Cavaliers and Crimson continued their control of the race at the 1,000 meter mark. They were two seats apart from one another and a full length ahead of the Wolverines.
U-M was still in sixth heading into the final quarter of the race before it pulled its fastest 500-meter split time of the race, which allowed it to pass Princeton and finish fifth in 6:43.91. Harvard eventually won the race in 6:35.30, while Virginia was second in 6:38.52.
Yale won the first varsity eight grand final to capture the national championship.
