
Tan, Bauer Among Top 15 Following Day One of Big Tens

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The University of Michigan women's golf team opened its 2008 Big Ten Championships, posting a 612 36-hole team total Friday (April 25) at Penn State's Blue Course. The Maize and Blue opened with a 303 tally during the first 18 holes, before closing the day's play with a 309 for the second 18.
Freshman Min Yean Tan (Penang Island, Malaysia/Hills International College [Queensland, Australia]) led the Wolverine charge on the first day of play, sitting among the top 10 tied with four others in the seventh spot with a 149 36-hole total. In the first round, she tallied a two-over 74 as she posted a team-best five birdies.
Opening on the 10th tee, Tan posted a bogey on her very first hole (No. 10), but she caught fire with three straight birdies on Nos. 13, 14 and 15 to put her two-under. A bogey on No. 16 put her back to one-under making the turn to the front side. Tan opened the front side with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 1 and 2 to sit at three-under with seven holes remaining. Back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 4 and 5 put her at one-under before a triple bogey on the par 3 No. 8 pushed her over par, closing at two-over 74.
In her second 18 holes of the day, Tan posted a three-over 75. After opening with a double-bogey on No. 10, she closed well on the back nine, posting two birdies on Nos. 11 and 14 to make the turn at one-over. Three bogeys during her first five holes on the front side pushed her to four-over before a birdie on the par 3 No. 8 helped her close the second round at three-over.
Sophomore Ashley Bauer (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS) followed Tan's play during the first 36-holes, as Bauer is just one shot behind with a 150 first-day total to put her in a tie for 12th. After opening with a two-over 74 in the first round, including four birdies, Bauer closed a four-over 76 after she ran into trouble on the front side. Fellow sophomore Andrea Ratigan (Tucson, Ariz./Sabino HS) is tied for 38th with a 157 total after she opened with a first round 76 to card an 81 in the second round.
In her first Big Ten Championships, freshman Louisa Shu (West Bloomfield, Mich./Birmingham Seaholm HS) sits tied for 41st with a 158 total after rounds of 80 and 78. Other Wolverine 367-hole totals include: senior co-captain Lindsay Davis (Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS), tied for 52nd with a 162 total (79-83) and junior co-captain Lydia Benitez Colon (Dorado, P.R./Pendleton School), tied for 55th with a 163 total (83-80).
No. 6 Purdue took the early lead, tallying a 586 36-hole total. The Boilermakers opened with a 298 after the first round to sit in second before firing an even par 288 in the second round to take a nine-stroke lead over No. 21 Michigan State (292-303), who posted a 595 first day total. No. 36 Ohio State (307-293) rallied in the second round and sits third at 600. Purdue's Christel Boeljon holds an early three stroke lead as she closed the first day with a one-under 143 total (73-70). Boilermaker teammate Maria Hernandez (75-71) and Ohio State's Emma Jandel (76-70) are second at 146.
After 36-holes in the books, the Wolverines will continue their 2008 Big Ten Championships run will the third round on Saturday (April 26) at PSU's Blue Course. The Maize and Blue will be paired with Indiana and Wisconsin and start on No. 1 at 9 a.m. The Big Ten Championships will conclude on Sunday (April 28) with a final 18 holes.

• Ashley Bauer started her 23rd straight tournament for U-M at the 2008 Big Ten Championships. She has yet to miss a start for U-M during her career. Lindsay Davis has started her last 14 straight events. In addition Bauer and Davis, Min Yean Tan at the only Wolverines to have started all 11 tournaments this season.
