
Wolverines Receive Invitation to NCAA Championships

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The NCAA Men's Gymnastics Committee announced Tuesday (April 8) that the No. 6 University of Michigan men's gymnastics team was selected to compete at the 2008 NCAA Men's Gymnastics Championships, which will be held Thursday through Saturday, April 17-19, at Stanford's Maples Pavilion in Palo Alto, Calif. This marks the 10th straight season under head coach Kurt Golder that the Wolverines have been selected for the national meet.
Twelve teams were chosen to compete in the national qualifier, consisting of two pre-qualifying sessions which will be conducted Thursday, April 17. Michigan, ranked sixth with a qualifying score of 353.470, will compete in the 1 p.m. PDT session against No. 2 Oklahoma (358.740), No. 3 Penn State (358.280), No. 7 Ohio State (350.790), No. 10 Nebraska (342.430) and No. 11 William & Mary (342.150). The Wolverines will begin the competition on a bye before moving to pommel horse.
The second session (7 p.m. PDT) will feature No. 1 Stanford (358.930), No. 4 California (356.170), No. 5 Illinois (355.810), No. 8 Minnesota (348.590), No. 9 Iowa (344.150) and No. 12 Temple (340.889).
From each pre-qualifying session the top three teams and the top three all-around competitors not on one of the qualifying teams, plus the top three individuals on each event not already qualified on a team or as an all-around competitor, will advance to the Team and All-Around Finals session, which will take place Friday, April 18, at 7 p.m. PDT.
Friday's top eight individuals on each event (plus ties) will advance to the Individual Event Finals competition Saturday, April 19, at 7 p.m. PDT.
Michigan, which won NCAA team championships in 1963, 1970 and 1999, finished fourth at last year's NCAA Championships. Three Wolverines earned All-America honors in 2007, including current sophomore David Chan(Singapore/Hale School), who placed seventh in the vault competition.
