FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. -- Three of the four CCHA Player of the Week awards were handed out to players from the University of Michigan ice hockey team, the league office announced on Monday (Dec. 29). Louie Caporusso(Woodbridge, Ontario) was namedthe Offensive Player of the Week, Chris Summers(Milan, Mich.) was tabbed the Defenseman of the Week and Bryan Hogan(Highland, Mich.)earned Goaltender of the Week.
Caporusso, Summers and Hogan were instrumental in Michigan repeating asGreat Lakes Invitational champion this past weekend (Dec. 27-28). All three players were named to the all-tournament team with Caporusso securing Most Valuable Player. U-M topped Michigan Tech, 5-0, on Dec. 27 and defeated Michigan State, 5-1, in the title game on Dec. 28.
A sophomore center, Caporusso rattled off the first three goals of the opening stanza against MTU to earn his second natural hat trick this season. He also scored three third-period goals at Western Michigan on Nov. 15. Caporusso potted his fourth goal of the GLI against the Spartans to balloon his season goal total to 18, which leads the nation and is just one goaloff the pace set by 2008 Hobey Baker Award winner Kevin Porter through the same number of games played (20).
Summers posted a career-high three assists and was also +3 in Michigan's dismantling of Michigan State in the GLI Championship. He factored in on U-Ms first, third and fourth goals of the 5-1 victory to improve his career scoring line against the Spartans to 4-7-11 in 13 games played. While Summers did not record a point vs. the Huskies in the semifinals, he was instrumental in negating seven MTU power plays as U-M earned the shutout.
Making his first career start in the GLI, Hogan was sharp as he made 15 saves against the Huskies for his second career shutout, both of which have come this season. Hogan stopped 19-of-20 Spartan shots in the finale to put his save percentage for the weekend at .971. The sophomore goalie is now 3-0-0 against Michigan State after he helped the Wolverines sweep their rival three weeks ago on Dec. 5-6.
Caporusso won his first career CCHA Offensive Player of the Week award earlier this season on Nov. 3. For Summers and Hogan, this marks the first CCHA Player of the Week honor for each player.
The Wolverines are off this weekend (Jan. 2-3)and return to regular-season CCHA play on Jan. 9-10 when they host the Miami RedHawks for two games at Yost Ice Arena.
