The No. 6-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team will host its annual Maize and Blue Intrasquad on Saturday (Dec. 13) at 7 p.m. in Cliff Keen Arena, providing fans their first opportunity to see this year's squad as it prepares for the upcoming 2009 season. Admission to the event is free and live scoring will be available on MGoBlue.com.
Head coach Kurt Golder will lead the Maize team, featuring All-Americans in junior co-captain David Chan(Singapore/Hale School, Perth, Western Australia) and sophomore Thomas Kelley(Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville). Kelley, last year's Big Ten Freshman of the Year, will compete in all six events, while Chan will participate on floor exercise, pommel horse and vault.
The Blue team will not compete in traditional Olympic order and is guided by assistant coaches Scott Vetere and Yuan Xiao. All-America senior/junior co-captain Phillip Goldberg(Dalton, Ga./McCallie) will work pommel horse and rings, while senior Ralph Rosso(Morganville, N.J./St. John Vianney) will be featured on pommel horse, floor exercise, vault, still rings and high bar.
The Wolverines, host of this season's Big Ten Championships, return 18 letterwinners, three NCAA All-Americans and seven Big Ten individual-event finalists from last season's team. U-M opens the 2009 campaign at the Windy City Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 17, in Chicago, Ill., where it will face off against No. 3 Ohio State, No. 4 Illinois, No. 8 Minnesota, No. 9 Iowa and No. 12 UIC.
