ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Despite a 34-17 shot advantage in the game, the No. 8-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team fell by a 2-1 margin to Western Michigan on Friday night (Nov. 14) at Yost Ice Arena. Thanks to Carl Hagelin(Sodertalje, Sweden), the Wolverines had a 1-0 lead at the second intermission, but U-M was unable stop the Bronco offensive and allowed two goals in the final period.
In the opening frame, the teams exchanged power-play opportunities, although neither capitalized on its man-advantage. Michigan outshot WMU by a 9-3 margin in the period, but the score remained 0-0 at the first intermission.
Hagelin finally broke the stalemate at 11:58 in the second period with a power-play tally. Aaron Palushaj(Northville, Mich.) dished the puck to Chad Langlais(Spokane, Wash.) at the point and the blueliner rocketed a shot towards WMU netminder Riley Gill. The goalie blocked the puck with his legs, but the deflection landed just outside the crease. Luckily for the Maize and Blue, Hagelin was there to poke it across the goal line to make the score 1-0.
Although the Wolverines only led by one, they held a 27-10 shot advantage at the close of the middle frame with Gill's 26 saves keeping the Broncos in the game.
Western Michigan answered Hagelin's marker at 1:38 in the third period, knotting the score at 1-1. Following a faceoff, Kevin Connauton passed the puck to Tyler Ludwig at the top of the slot. Ludwig took a high shot that sped past Michigan goaltender Billy Sauer's (Walworth, N.Y.) glove and into the back of the net. Max Campbell was credited with the second assist on the play.
The Broncos scored the go-ahead goal with 4:22 remaining in the game. Connauton recovered a loose puck in Michigan's defensive zone and fired shot from near the blue line that soared over Sauer's stick-side shoulder for the 2-1 victory.
Tomorrow night (Saturday, Nov. 15), the Wolverines will travel to Lawson Ice Arena in Kalamazoo, Mich., to complete their home-and-home series with WMU. The game is slated to begin at 7:35 p.m.
