MADISON, Wis. -- Four members of the No. 10-ranked University of Michigan men's soccer team were named to the All-Big Ten first team, the conference announced Thursday (Nov. 13) at the postseason award ceremony. Seniors Jake Stacy(Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central) and Michael Holody(Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) and juniors Mauro Fuzetti(Houston, Texas/Stratford) and Peri Marosevic(Rockford, Ill./Edison Academy) made up the Wolverine contingent of honorees, while senior Alex Morisset(Shelby Township, Mich./De La Salle) was recognized as U-M's Sportsmanship Award honoree.
Stacy, who was also named to the first team in 2007, becomes the second player in program history to make the first team twice in his career. With career highs in goals (7) and points (19), Stacy is having the most successful season of his career. He earned a Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week and was named NSCAA National Player of the Week after scoring the game-winning goal in back-to-back upset victories in the first week of October.
Holody earned his second postseason conference award after picking up second team laurels during the 2007 campaign. Holody has two goals and five points, having started all 18 games this season. Leading the team from the backline, the tri-captain also has a Big Ten weekly award and NSCAA National Player of the Week honor to his name.
Fuzetti has blossomed into one of the team's top offensive threats in 2008, more than doubling his point output of a season ago to 22 points on nine goals and four helpers. His nine markers are the sixth-highest total for a Wolverine in program history and has earned him a spot on three national teams of the week. Fuzetti became the fifth Maize and Blue striker to notch a hat trick, denting the twine three times against Detroit on Sept. 19.
One of three unanimous selections to the first team, Marosevic earned his third All-Big Ten laurel of his career. A two-time second team honoree, the Wolverine junior is second in the conference in scoring with 12 goals and 27 points. Marosevic is one of two players in the conference to earn Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week on two separate occasions in 2008, having won the first of the campaign on Sept. 1 and last onNov. 10.
Rounding out the Wolverine nominees is Sportsmanship Award recipient Morisset. A two-time captain, Morisset has started all 18 games this season and has a career-high four points -- all off of helpers. He is now a candidate for the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award, as the conference office will honor one male and one female student-athlete from each institution at the end of the school year.
Michigan will take onthird-seededIndiana tomorrow (Friday, Nov. 14) in the semifinal round of the Big Ten Championship being held at the McClimon Track/Soccer Complex in Madison, Wis. The game, slated for 1:30 p.m. CST, will air live on the Big Ten Network.
