ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 8-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team completed a weekend sweep of Ohio State for the first time since 2004 with a relentless 6-1 victory on Saturday night (Nov. 1) at Yost Ice Arena. Louie Caporusso(Woodbridge, Ont.) led the offensive attack with a pair of power-play goals and an assist, extending to five games his career-high goal and point streaks, and Bryan Hogan(Highland, Mich.) had a season-best 25 saves.
Michigan capitalized on its first power-play opportunity, scoring at 4:13 of the opening period to go up 1-0. Brian Lebler(Penticton, B.C.) passed the puck to Caporusso at the bottom of the right circle, and the center took a hard shot that, despite an awkward angle, found its way in between the legs of Ohio State netminder Cal Heeter. Chad Langlais(Spokane, Wash.) was credited with the second assist on the play -- one of three helpers on the night for the sophomore.
At 17:32, the Wolverines doubled their lead with a tally from Tim Miller(Davisburg, Mich.). Aaron Palushaj(Northville, Mich.) jump-started the play by sliding the puck to Caporusso in the right circle. Caporusso bounced the puck towards the net, and Miller, who was trailing the play, skated in to deflect the bouncing shot into the back of the goal.
David Wohlberg (South Lyon, Mich.) registered U-M's first shorthanded goal of the season at 8:23 of the second period to increase his team's lead, 3-0. The rookie skated around the back of the goal and stole the puck off the stick of an unsuspecting OSU defender. Wohlberg then carried it to the front of the crease and backhanded the puck into the top of the net for his first career goal.
The Wolverines kept on rolling, and at 10:45, Travis Turnbull(Chesterfield, Mo.) made the scoreboard read 4-0 when he received the puck at the high slot from Langlais and snapped a shot past Heeter's blocker. The score forced a Buckeye goaltending change, putting Dustin Carlson in OSU's crease.
Despite the switch, OSU was unable to quell the Maize and Blue offense as Brandon Naurato(Livonia, Mich.) crossed the puck to the left side, and an on-the-go Palushaj scooped up the puck and wristed it past Carlson to put his team up 5-0 at the 12 minute-mark of the second period. Greg Pateryn(Sterling Heights, Mich.) received an assist on the score, giving the freshman his first career point.
Although Michigan outscored the Buckeyes by a 3-0 margin in the middle frame, Ohio State outshot U-M 14-7 during the period.
Caporusso garnered his second power-play goal of the evening, putting Michigan up 6-0 at 6:27 in the final frame. The sophomore took a slap shot from the middle of the right circle that ricocheted off the left post and into the back of the net. Lebler and Langlais were awarded the helpers on the play.
Ohio State broke Hogan's shutout performance at 10:35 on the man advantage. Corey Elkins recovered a loose puck in the slot and passed it to Zac Dalpe in the left circle. Dalpe took a shot that squibbed off Hogan's leg pad and across the goal line, making the score 6-1.
Next weekend (Nov. 7-8), the Wolverines will travel to the University of Alaska for a two-game series at the Carlson Center in Fairbanks, Alaska. Both games are slated for 7:05 p.m. AST.
